Bought a digicam myself soon after arriving here for W500,000. Insisted on a Japanese camera; everything Korean seems to fall apart (fridge, mobile, air conditioner, digital audio recorder....).

Fewer and fewer "Japanese" digital cameras are made in Japan anymore. More often they're made in China. Same with Samsungs.

ulsan chris,

I live in Fukuoka (where I presume you were coming on your visa run) and meant to post on this before you went but took a while to get registered on here - sorry.

Peppergirl has said most of what I would have. I'd just add that if coming to Fukuoka, yodabashi is the most tourist friendly place and does have the points card you could use too, but it's not necessarily the cheapest. Bestdenki and Yamadadenki are perhaps better value - they're also more likely to beat any cheaper price elsewhere on the spot, whereas yodabashi will be "this is our price PERIOD"

Probably consistent with Chris' observations, I'd say that digi cams ARE cheaper in Japan, but not by enough to make a special journey worth it, only if you're going anyway.

Also, re the poster claiming ALL his Korean products fell apart, who's either been exceptionally unlucky or (more likely methinks) is exaggerating a tad...well, be aware that plenty of Japanese products have a reputation for falling apart too, ESPECIALLY the ones for the home market, as the Japanese generally replace their appliances quicker than other people and so they tend not to be built to last. It may surprise some of you to know that Sony products have a terrible reputation here in Japan - often heard jokes from Japanese friends likening Sony products to tofu! Panasonic is the one people most often swear by - my experience supports this too.
