What's the best bank for Seoul area: Shinhan or Woori?
For checking account (Interest Checking Account?)
  • Fee's for basic checking or for interest checking?
  • Who has more ATM's in Seoul or specifically areas like Sinchon, Gangnam, Hongdae.
  • Better customer service/wait times?
  • English proficiency?

Thanks!

checking account? in Korea? are you here yet?

there are NO personal checks. there aren't even corporate checks.
direct internet banking my boy. direct and nothing ever bounces.

Both of those banks have more ATMs than you can count in major metropolitan areas.

Bank fees are almost universal for domestic services.
AFter you get your ARC there is no reason to ever go to the counter. You can do EVERYTHING at an ATM or via the internet (including bank transfers, pay bills, foreign remittances (sending money home)).

Both banks have a translator service available by phone during banking hours if you find you are at a counter and the teller cannot speak English.

Yeah, i'm in Korea - i pick up my ARC tomorrow. By "checking account" i meant just the standard bank account, sorry US lingo. Razz

I guess there's no need to worry about bank fee's since everyone has to pay them? And there's no difference in ATM availability between Shinhan and Woori in areas such as Sinchon, Hongdae, or Gangnam?

Just out of curiosity,
in what English speaking countries is "checking account" an alien word?

OP, you're from the States, correct?
I'm from Canada.

THE UK,
Aus, NZ and nam-a-gong left.

Yes, i'm from the states.
Canadians are great by the way - luv hanging out with them. They're like the laid back version of Americans, but i think they smoke pot and drink more...well Californians not included. Wink

Well ttompatz made it seem like it was. I was talking about Checking Accounts. To me when someone says "checking account" they mean a standard bank account where you put money in it. ttompatz seemed like he was understanding me to be saying i'm writing checks...i know Korea uses direct deposit banking but for lack of a better word at the time (should i be saying "direct banking account" instead?) i used Checking account assuming people would understand what i meant...

Yeah in the US, when we say "Checking Account" we mean YOUR version of "Standard Banking Account" because for us they're the same.

It's all goooooood though. No need to argue semantics. I see whichever bank strikes my fancy first - Shinhan or Woori. Very Happy
