How much money would be a good amount to have for a 1-2 month trip through Europe? Hostels and cheap accomodation are OK, too, as long as there are no bedbugs.

well are you asking Dollars won or euro?

will you get a euro rail pass? or will you be flying around on budget airlines?

its also best to think 100usd a day! of course some days will spend just 20bucks, but other days you might spend 150!
when I travel I also think 100usd a day..

europe take 5000 usd with you for 2 months...

I spent a month in Europe this past summer and paid $8,000 for 2 people. That includes 5 day Eurail , RT airfare, Eurostar tickets from Paris to London, a ferry from Athens to Santorini, food, transportation via subway and bus, souvenirs, occasional admission fees, and hotels. We never stayed in a hostel, but we budgeted about $50 a night for each person. If you're staying in hostels, I think you could spend about $4-6,000 a person.

When I travel like that I usually budget US$100 per day as a good average.

Invariably it works out to something close to that over-all when averaged over 30-60 days on a trip.

You can cut it down a bit by traveling at night / overnight (sleeping on the train / coach) and saving on some of your hotel/hostel costs but eventually you still need a decent sleep and a shower.

depends on the country too. Eastern European countries are a heck of a lot cheaper. Get a rail pass in advance as well. Rail was the biggest drain on me when I was over there.

Spending $3000 to $4000 on Europe is such a waste.

I was in Iran 2 months ago and I barely spent US $25 per day (and that includes hotel). It was amazing how inexpensive and wonderful it was.

You have to ask yourself, is it really worth $50 US a night to stay in a bunk bed hostel in some generic European city with 11 other bland white people crammed into the same room?

Go to Iran instead!

My trip was in 2002, but I averaged about $500 Canadian a week. You can cut costs by using night trains, but I wouldn't recommend it. One of the trains I used caught fire a month after I'd been on it, and everybody in that car burned to death.

Oh, and I lost my zippo.

I just went to Europe in February and spent about $2200 for 3 weeks. I did Europe CHEAP too: Hostels, busses, budget flights, cooking at the hostel, skipping meals, walked everywhere, no public transportation or taxis, off season. I was in London, Edinburgh, Madrid, Barcelona, Venice, Florence and Rome. I don't think I ever paid less than $20 a night for a hostel, on average it was $28-35 a night.

It just depends what you want out of the experience. I had a lot of fun walking each city all day, maybe seeing museums or sights and then cooking dinner and drinking at the hostel at night. The more you want to see, the faster you want to get places, the more partying you want to do, the nicer the place you want to stay, the more you want to eat at restaurants... you just figure out how much it costs to do that and multiply it by 30 days or 60 days. Like: eating at a restaurant costs 15 euros. Times 60 days, that's 900 euros (over $1000) just to eat one meal at a restaurant everyday.

A sidenote: I have never had sticker shock like I did in the UK. It was insane. Everything seemed to be priced the same as in the US, except that the pound was almost 2.5x stronger. In America I might eat at a bar and spend $10 on food and beer. In a pub in London, it was 10 pounds.. or almost $23.
