an attempt to legitimize konglish, a bunch of english mistakes routinized in poor textbooks and the thriving domestic ESL industry self-help literature, mistakes spoken by Koreans to Koreans and righteously defended as their way of speaking english when their mistakes are pointed out

in a society where 98% speak Korean it's absurd to make english an official language when it isn't even alive here as a second language

How often has this proposal been made in the past decade? I can recall at least one other time.

Yeeeah... You can go ahead and complain about a Korean saying Sand-a-wich-ee when you can properly use co-opted French phrases.

C'est la vie.

I always crack up when I see that guy's e-mail address. Can't they just standardize the e-mail addresses? Like familyname.firstname#@koreaherald.com.

The fact that it is even being considered is dumb. Hardly any English spoken in this country. Usually, in order to declare an official language, you've got to have a sizable number of people speaking it and it has to have an impact somewhere. English doesn't have much of an impact on Korea despite their woeful attempts at learning it. Another braindead idea by Koreans. Rolling Eyes

Yeah. The current administration in this country is like the Korean version of the Bush administration.

Come on! Support the guy!

If this comes through, babies will be born that are fluent in English.

Why stop at one more language...think of the power the nation with the highest IQ could accomplish if their kids had automatic fluency at several languages, thanks to government influence.

The man is a fucking genius.

If you think about it though, only a few decades ago (or maybe half a century ago) did they adapt Hangul and forced everyone to learn it. Why can't they do the same in Korea?

But, I'm not a supporter of it but if they adopted English and Korean as their national languages it'd be pretty sweet. They'd be the third (?) Asian country do so, behind Singapore and Hong Kong who of course only did it because they were British colonies. I never see this happen though.

I did an exercise with my teacher conversation class, creating a new society, and one of the questions was: "what would be your official language(s)?" and I specifically pointed out that you can have more then one, and every group only choose Korean. I don't get it, they're paying so much and so much time into learning English but Korea is of course always more superior, better, and needed.

Ha! Am I the only one who found this hilarious? Get it? "them" can refer to either the barriers or the foreigners! Ha! Brilliant!

Not quite as good as requesting that foreigners be removed, but still...
