I can't see it quite being the same. I suspect they're going to have to go after a lot more world leaders.

I have to admit the Election special was kind of lame, but he came back the next day with a stellar show. As far as the serious stuff, check out the hits on the Youtube Crossfire video to see how many people agree with you. I thought it was one of the best TV moments of the year, at least. Hell, I'd even say that show was the start of Tucker Carlson's downfall.

Yeah, it's because Jon Stewart is more about really good delivery than improvisation. He's amazing when he has something to work with, kind of dull otherwise. Kind of like the opposite of Conan.

Maybe that's unclear. I believe the Daily Show is funny, until very recently.

The Nov 6 show was great! And luckily it's SO easy to get the shows online.

Actually this is what you said:
Quote:
If I have to judge from their live election episode, I'd have to say the funny is already on life-support. Jon Stewart, despite his pretentions to the contrary, is extremely partisan. I don't think he can really lay into Barack like he did the Bush administration. That's right, I don't think that much of Jon Stewart. I've seen him do serious, and he's crap at it.

Ergo:
Quote:
If you never liked it before...

A small bit of assumption on my part, but I think you can see why.

Again, I think it's a little premature to make a call about its demise. Some of its best material were not jabs at Bush at all. That's way too easy. Go to the archives on the Daily Show website and look for the Even Stephven series or skits by Rob Corddry, Mo Rocca, Nancy Walls...They've been doing for over 10 years what Ali G couldn't even do for more than 2 seasons.

It'll be just as easy during an Obama administration. Look at all these people on both sides to make fun of:

(the Kerry part is the best)

liberals are well capable of making fun of themselves

just last night Jon Stewart made several well-received jokes about Obamamania

... the show will continue, stronger than ever, because the anger will be out of the humour

More than Bush or conservatism, the Daily Show's main target is the mainstream media, and its overinflated sense of self-importance. Luckily for them, they'll never run of material, at least not in the immediate future.

He is screwed, blued and tattoed! Jon is going to go the way of Dana Carvey.

For you youngsters who don't know Dana, here you go http://www.metacafe.com/watch/400999/dana_carvey_as_bush/

This seems right. There was definitely anger in the humor.

Here's a fun Culture11 piece about Stewart (and some other comundit).

Quote:
Both Bill Maher and Jon Stewart peddle cynicism disguised as honest truth-telling. Both men try to convince the viewer that their general distrust, combined with their penchant for mocking politicians, makes them ipso facto wise. And both men do all this while pushing their own, preferred political agendas.

The article is a tad too resentful, and resentment is never compelling, but I think its right that Stewart professes that his role is as jester all too well when he's doing more than merely jesting.

Interesting topic for a thread, OP.

I concur with your assessment of Stewart, whose comic talents are also limited in my view.

I also think he'll be gagged because the PC crowd will frown on any criticism of Obama that even remotely smacks of racism to them. Plus Jon won't want to be seen as being "uncool," as if Blacks are the only ones who define that term anyway.

Hmmm where did that come from? Sounds like someone's got issues. Not being "PC" - as you call it- but I'm not sure why criticism of Obama has to be about his race.
