A friend is planning to go to Korea to teach soon. He won't be taking it with him, but I know he occasionally smokes pot. He's worried because THC stays in the system for kind of a long time. He asked me if they test for marijuana in Korea and I said I didn't think so. Anyone know? It would sure be lousy to make it all the way there just to have them find THC in his system and send him home. Any experience with this? |

I understand Korea dropped the pot test, but I'm not 100% sure. Tell him to stop for 30 days to get it out of his system and see if he can be happy living without and pretend nothing is available as if being in Korea. Then he will know if he wants to live in a place with no weed. Some people would be like hell no and others are like OK lets take this job because they're sure aint no money where I'm at now.
The good thing is a regular smoker or anyone who likes it on the weekends, vacations, camping trips, and so on can go without with no repercussions other than boredom as it's boring to never get stoned. |

I have this "friend" who worried about the same thing...He was hanging around with the wrong crowd and had many marijuanna cigarettes pushed on him by the slack jawed dopers.
He quit smoking 90 days before coming to korea and he drank 3 liters of water the night before the test... "He" passed with flying colours!
(BTW: His friend showed no sympathy for him and he spent all his 90 nights around excessive amounts of 2nd hand ganj...those BASTARDS!)
The test varies from hospital to hospital...He went where there was still a blood analysis and a urine test....(as of Sept 20th)...Immigration currently only wants a urine test but the word hasn't spread around to all the hospitals yet. (so I've been told)
You have 90 days after you enter the country to take the test but you can't get an alien reg. card until you do the test (no card=no bank account, no phone, no internet, etc.)
Hope that helps! |

I had a phone, bank account and internet long before I got my ARC. You simply have your school or a friend help you. |

My school was trying to help...I was denied all this stuff without ID (or so I was told)...I think this country is seriously lacking consistency...everyone seems to say something different from day to day...oh well |

As for EPIK teachers;
They are still testing for reefer. The last email I got about resigning (for the guys that were resigning over the summer) stated to not go home and be an idiot and smoke weed, because you would have to take another blood test that tested for pot and HIV amongst other things. The email was from our coordinators.
And how did you get a ARC with out your drug test? We had people try to get a ARC before their results and the immigration office sent them packing. They have supposedly gotten stricter on these sort of things.
I can understand getting internet or or a bank account they sometimes let you get those with your passport if you promise to give them your ARC number when you get it.

Is Korea the only country that tests for drugs and HIV? I find it a serious invasion of privacy. I do understand the HIV test, I had to have one to marry my wife, but testing for drugs is unacceptable, especially having personal knowledge of the way Koreans put back the alcohol (if you can refer to soju as alcohol). |

Wow!!! I'm glad I never got in with the 'wrong crowd' and had marijuanna cigarettes pushed on me... after all, 'marijuana cigarettes' lead to harder drugs... like... caffeen and nicoteen. |

America tests even more extensively than Korea, unless it's retail sales, telemarketing, or other low paying job. I mention America, because there are ESL and regular PS positions available in the job market, but not like in Asia nor easy to land. PS teachers get tested for drugs regularly, but college professors probably do not. It was mandated at federal level a few years ago that all PS teachers get drug tested.
If you find drug testing for a job too invasive, you'll be even more disturbed to know that in Asian countries like Korea and Thailand, the police can just enter your home, pull you aside on the street, or a hotel room to drug test you without a warrant. A dirty UA is just as bad as getting caught smoking a joint. While Korea may deny you the ARC and cancel the visa and let you leave on your dime, Thailand might not be so forgiving to just let you leave. It's risky just to have pot in your system regardless of where you smoked. Asian and Arab countries just perceive pot to be a really bad heinous crime though stoners into Bob Marley are all over Thailand, but not in Korea. |

100% untrue. I was tested for cannabis.
I also have a friend who smoked 2 nights before he left for Korea, and had his test about 3 weeks after arriving. He wasn't a heavy smoker, maybe 5 times per month. He passed. |
