What's a good program to convert DVDs to AVI files with subtitles that work?

Is there much difference in quality of picture and sound between programs?

I used to use a program, but I forget what it was. However, the subs often didn't work, and sometimes the sound got out of synch.

Any advice, please?

Thanks!

JBomb, I've been using DVDShrink for some time now and I have never seen an option for converting a DVD to an avi file. I looked again, and still can't find it. Am I missing something?

I_Am_The_Kiwi, I guess I am dumber than a monkey then. Cause when I tried opening the video files from a DVD, nothing happened. So I tried looking at the tutorial. Didn't see anything helpful. Did see that it could take more than five hours to convert the files on my laptop. That is a heck of a lot longer from the programs I have used in the past. Is this true? Could you tell me how to open a DVD on this program?

Any other options?

Thanks.

You have to first rip the dvd (can use dvd decrypter) and then encode to avi using AutoGK.

Here's a tutorial: http://www.aeonity.com/david/how-convert-dvds-avi-video-format-tutorial

Yes, it can take a long time to re-encode, especially using a laptop.

Huhhh?

Like a fool, I took your advice.

Wrong.

The comments section says there is a virus.

And my computer has shut down twice now, and warned there is a virus in my memory.

Thanks a lot.

like wormhole said, you need to rip the dvd to your hard drive first. if you encode straight from the dvd it would just take longer anyways.

a few horus to convert - sounds about right depending on the specs of your laptop - but remember you are taking 4.5GB+ of movie and compressing it into 700MB. it will take a while

or you could just download whatever the movie is that your encoding....faster and better quality most likely cos they havnt used an all-in-1 app to do it.

Rolling Eyes You get a couple of guys trying to give you good advice, links to programs and tutorials, then you go off and download a program which is freeware off torrents and includes a virus warning... I think I'll stop trying to help now.

There is no virus I use this program myself. I have scanned it with both avg and avast and with pretty much every anti spyware known to man. I don't know why your computer is shutting down but i doubt it is due to this program. Some antivirus programs detect "patches" as viruses. Maybe this is what has happened.

If you think that this program has caused your problems go to system restore and restore it back to before you installed it.

I use WINAVI and IMGBURN.
Winavi converts between quite a few formats.
Imgburn is useful for building and writing.

Step 1 - rip DVD to hard drive with
DVD Decrypter

Step 2 - encode DVD files to avi file (xvid is my choice of codec) with
AutoGK

Job done.
