Last month at a gunshow in Westfield, Massachusetts:

Now I've never been to a gunshow myself, but I would surmise that they're not just for demonstration purposes, they are about sales too.

Gun shows.

Quote:
At approximately 5,000 gun shows each year in 32 states, criminals and terrorists are allowed to purchase firearms from private gun dealers without an ID or background check.

Consider the following examples.

A manual titled, "How Can I Train Myself for Jihad" was found in September, 2001, among the rubble at a training facility for a radical Pakistan-based Islamic terrorist organization. The manual contained a chapter on "Firearms Training" and singled out the United States for its easy availability of firearms. It also named the states where Al Qaeda members in the United States could "obtain an assault weapon legally, preferably AK-47 or variations."

In Texas, Muhammad Asrar was arrested in an investigation of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He pleaded guilty to immigration violations and illegal possession of ammunition. The Pakistani store owner said he had bought handguns, rifles, and a submachine gun at gun shows since 1994.

On Sept. 10, 2001, just one day before the devastating attacks against the United States, Ali Boumelhem was convicted in Michigan on a variety of weapons violations plus conspiracy to ship weapons to the terrorist organization Hezbollah. He and his brother Mohamed had purchased an arsenal weapons from Michigan gun shows without undergoing background checks.

On April 20, 1999, in the deadliest high school shooting in US history, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold procured two shotguns, an assault rifle, and a TEC-9 assault pistol and shot 26 students in Littleton, Colo., killing 13 before killing themselves. An ATF investigation found that all four weapons had been purchased from private sellers at gun shows. Three of the guns were purchased by Robyn Anderson, a friend of both Harris and Klebold. Anderson said that she would not have purchased the guns for the teens if she had been required to undergo a background check at the gun show.

Branch Davidian cult leader David Koresh used Texas gun shows to make large gun purchases. According to an ATF arrest warrant, Koresh and his cult made "regular purchases of weapons and ammunition [from] flea markets and gun shows." Authorities estimated that Koresh had at least 200 automatic and semi-automatic assault rifles stockpiled, plus thousands of rounds of ammunition. In 1995, four FBI agents and six Branch Davidians died in an exchange of gunfire. Seventy six people died in a fire that destroyed the cult compound.

Timothy McVeigh, who bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995 was a "private seller" at gun shows. He along with accomplice Michael Fortier, admitted to stealing $60,000 worth of shotguns, rifles, and handguns from an Arkansas gun collector's ranch and then reselling the stolen weapons at gun shows.

The boy's death is bad news, Kikomom.

It is news to me that one can buy and/or own automatic assault rifles in America without undergoing the background investigations the Class III license entails. Same goes for a concealed weapons permit.

If this has changed, then I would support reasserting and tightening these restrictions.

So basically, the so-called Sportsman's Clubs supporting this industry are supporting terrorists. Now just how patriotic is that?

A couple minutes googling, and not only where can I buy assault weapons, but when:

Milwaukiedave: there is a political war going on inside the United States re: Constitutional law and the right to bear arms. Your assigning mental illness to one side, "the nuts," while dogmatically defending the other, indeed while disingenuously suggesting that the former merely imagines that the left, their opponent, has always come after their interests, seems unhelpful, to say the least.

You seem far too rigid, not to mention spiteful, in your politics. Politics is the art of compromise, Milwaukiedave. Got any?

You miss the point so artfully Gopher, it's no surprise to me. It's not about compromise, but the lies be spread by the wackos. Anyone that believes Obama is going to take people's guns away just because he's a democrat is just that. I won't even bother to ask you if you believe this or not because you are incapable of giving a straight answer.

My suggestion to you, in your future career as a lobbyist is this, Kikomom: lose the antagonistic "gun nuts" and the "terrorism" vocab. Focus on something most of us will readily agree on: completely and permanently banning automatic and semi-automatic assault rifles in the United States. I support gun rights, but I would support you in this.

Also, would you compromise and agree on this: handguns, shotguns, and hunting rifles are fine for those law-abiding adults, with no criminal records whatsoever (traffic tickets do not count), with no mental confinements, and who have not been discharged dishonorably from the armed forces, willing to register their weapons with state and local authorities? If so, this already exists in most states.

There is one national limitation, too, which I believe derives from Brady: no one with any domestic-violence citations or convictions, or subjects of restraining orders, I understand, may ever again buy a weapon in any state. No appeal no matter what.

What would you change in this structure?

While it is easy to ban automatic weapons the problem arises with semi-automatic weapons and then there is the assault weapon terminology and definition.

What makes a semi-automatic an assault weapon?

Are all semi-automatic weapons assault weapons?

What about revolvers?

Would you allow large capacity clips for bolt action hunting rifles?

When you look at the laws as passed you begin to see how slippery these definitions become.

The other problem is when news media call a semi-auto weapon an automatic weapon, there is a difference.

I've said it before and I'll say it again until law enforcement and the courts can prove that laws on the books are being enforced and are effective then writing new laws aren't going to help.

Model any new laws based on those that are working or have worked.

Get rid of the laws that don't work.

I think we could agree that we are talking about military-style, automatic and semi-automatic rifles, mostly designed to put multiple rounds downrange rather fast.

All handguns are fine (although the Desert Eagle .50 cal. pistol has always struck me as a bit extreme; check it out on Youtube.com if you want to see demonstrations), as are all shotguns, and hunting rifles. As far as I know, Jandar, only semi-automatic handguns use magazines. Definitely not shotguns. And hunting rifles tend to be bolt-action weapons, no?

We are talking about permanently banning the production, sale, and possession of the kinds of weapons we -- I assume you are former Army and know precisely what I am talking about -- trained on and carried in the Marine Corps: M16s and MP5s, for example. Add AKs and AK-wannabes. But I do not want to even pretend imagining civilians' buying Mk19s. None of these belong in civilian hands in our cities. What do you need such weapons for as a civilian?

The more I think about it, the more I disagree with it. Just how many Burt Gummers are there out there...?

Ah, grenade launcher. An important part of any person's home and property defense arsenal. How dare liberals try to interfere with the sale of such an essential item? Damn pinko, commie hippies!
