I don't know.. there are some great "alternative hip-hop" artists out there who rap about entirely different stuff than rolling through their hoods popping caps and whoring. Dr. Octagon, Madvillain, Jurassic 5, Blackalicious... |

And are they average at what they do, or above average? Are they Vanilla Ices or Eminems? |

i think the argument is that if it's music, it should be good, or intelligent people shouldn't spend money on it.
maybe that's why koreans mostly download this crap. |

the above artists all blow hard...
they're pop, not hip hop, not rap...
with the exception of dynamic duo... who used to be cb mass for those who remember or care |
Yeah, Dynamic Duo is decent. They have some funk and don't take themselves too seriously. |
Well whatever, i think Country music blows too, despite the fact half the continental US loves it. Big deal, it's called PREFERENCE get over it.

You totally missed the point.
Whether or not you like Country music is totally irrelevant. That story was just a scenario to parody the rise in popularity of a musical genre in a radically different setting, totally removed from its roots and identity to the point of hilarity. The fact that the Country music group was black was just to show contrast.
YOU may respect and like those groups, but that doesn't mean other people have to agree with you. Just deal with it.
Most people from other countries don't really care what other countries think of "their" music, etc. to the extent that most Koreans seem to care. It's kind of a bizarre obsession they seem to have.
Also, negative bias does not automatically equal racism, so stop playing the victim card. We can ridicule a music group if we want to, it doesn't mean we are inherently anti-Korean! Get over it.
But hey, maybe you should join a hip hop forum and see what they think of some of those groups. I bet a lot of people would be surprised that there is so much hip hop coming out of Korea. Now, whether they will actually like it or not is another matter, but who cares? If YOU like it, enjoy it. To quote you: "Big deal, it's called PREFERENCE get over it. " Maybe you could take your own advice? |

| I was trying to figure out what it is that isn't quite there - it's everything. The beats and the samples suck, all of their voices sound the same and none of the rhymes have any depth, style or soul. I hate to make it so simple but....black people (and latinos) make better music, it's just the way it is. Korean culture has no bounce. |

El-P, Atmosphere, Ugly Duckling, Aesop Rock, Dr. Octagon, Madvillain, Jurassic 5, Blackalicious...
Wow. I had nearly forgotten how amazing hip-hop could be since coming to Korea. All of the above got steady spins from me back in the States.
So are there any indie-rappers like the ones above in Korea?
The kids here swear this poppy R and B is "hip hop". I get so sick of hearing that K-Pop stuff spewing outta every cell phone and store that I just can't wait to get home and throw on some "Paid In Full" (Platinum Edition) or some Grand Buffet to scour my ears out with.
Seriously, who's the De La Soul of Korea? |
