I need advice, please.

I signed an EPIK contract with a STARTING DATE of 28 Sept 2008 (FINISHING DATE of 27 Sept 2009).

However, Chusok delayed my ARRIVAL DAY in Korea until 7 Oct 2008.
So, my ARC FINISH DATE is 7 Oct 2009.

My school paid me from my first day teaching (9 Oct 2008) - and I must work 1 FULL YEAR to get my severance/flights (that would be until 8 Oct 2009).

(1) Is my ARC finishing date the end of my working visa date ?

(2) Do I need an extension to my ARC until 7 Oct or 9 Oct 2009 ?

(3) Do I need to get another contract signed to cover me from 28 Sept
2009 until my new finishing date (9 Oct 2009)?

Any help appreciated. I'm at a good school, and I don't want to inconvenience them - but I don't want any 'problems' at the end of my contract. Thanks.

Most likely they will ask you to sign another contract. Did it to me once or twice Very Happy to make dates line up.

But, not always! If they don't Shocked Don't panic! a couple of days before your stuff expires go down to immigration and get a 30 day extension. Then finish up and don't stress.

Lots of people get extensions it is painless!

The time for leaving - she comes.

My last day working is 2009 October 01.
I depart Korea on 2009 October 5 (yippie).
My ARC card expires on 2009 October 07.

I'm on paid annual leave from October 05 to October 08.
My contract starts from 2008 Oct 09 and finishes 2009 October 08.

Do I need to get an extension to my ARC card if I leave Korea 4 days earlier than my contract expires????

Note: my ARC card expires 2 days earlier than my contract finish date.

Any info appreciated.

Your contract means little to the government. They care about the date on your ARC card so make sure that it doesn't expire before you leave, otherwise you'll be held up at the airport/may have to pay fees/etc.

Getting your ARC temporarily extended is easy. I did it myself not too long ago and posted the steps in another thread.

Thanks Wendy Rose. However, I think your info is for a non working extension. But although I'll be out of Korea (on paid vacation) until my contract expires (I'm leaving 4 days early), I think I'll still need a working extension (because while on paid vacation I'm still technically working).

I'm worried that some Mandarin in the local POE may refuse to pay my final contract benefits if I don't comply with the 'letter' of the law/contract.

Any comments appreciated.

Yes; technically, it's the end of you period of sojourn and you must leave by midnight on that date.

That depends on whether or not you sign an amended contract ending Oct. 8 (not the 9th... you started on the 9th last year).

Yes and no. Is that as clear as mud? Your present contract ends Sept. 27 and that is your legal finish date. Therefore (unless you sign an amended contract), you will have (legally) fulfilled the terms of a one-year contract and be eligible for severance pay and flights. However, this is not to say some 'administrative mandarin' will not try to jerk you around and make you stay until Oct. 8.

If you sign an amended contract you will indeed need an extension for the purpose of work for that one day; and Immigration will want:
1. passport;
2. ARC;
3. new contract;
4. Proof of Employment;
5. Business Registration Number;
6. HIV and TBPE test results;
7. W30,000 processing fee.

You're in a crappy situation... and the 'best card' you can play is to convince your: school, school district, and the Superintendent of POE/MOE that it's a hastle for them to try and make you stay until Oct. 8 (even if only 'on the books') to eligible for severance and airfare (without litigation).

Why do you say two days if your ARC expires Oct. 7, and your last day of work is Oct. 8?

Immigration won't extend your period of sojourn for the purpose of work past your contract end date.

Went to Immigration yesterday. No problems. My ARC card expires on Oct 07 - and they extended it to expire on Oct 08 (1 day extra to line up with my contract end date).
30,000 won, and good insurance.

Thanks for all the advice.
PS. To get the 1 day working extension - I needed: passport, ARC card, application form, 30,000 won - and my schools business number (not sure if they used the schools no though).

Good luck.
