This substitute co-teacher who has been here for a couple of months now has really come into her own. She somehow got this idea in her skull that all of the students need to be loved because they're innocent, and when I try to punish them for misbehaving, I'm being insensitive.

Yesterday I noticed a couple of girls chatting away after I had told them twice to do the worksheet I handed out. I spent a few minutes with them to make sure they understood what to do and did my best to be encouraging. Sure enough, as soon as I walked away from their desk, they started in with the laughing and chatting again. So I said "OK. You two--writing punishment--Now." To which my coteacher replied "Calm down. They smart student. No making trouble." Mad

These days, any attempts to punish students on my part are met with her undermining my authority. Fine. From now on I don't care what they do. No punishments from me. I'll stand at the front of the class, do nothing, and let her do things her way. While she's "teaching" I'll make no effort to control the students. Any other ideas?

Yet another reason I'm glad to be leaving public school.

It sounds like you're doing most of the teaching. If that's the case and she continues to undermine your authority, tell her that she can do the teaching and you'll monitor.

She was probably one of the mouthy, chatty students back in her day.

If she were younger than me I can tell you that I'd make a hell of a lot of trouble for her, especially if I had been at the school for a while and she was a temp.

Oh well, you only have a few weeks of regular teaching left so have some fun with it.

So just go and have a chat with one of the students while she's lecturing. Pull out your cell phone and call someone.

sounds like another inexperienced co-teacher. Tell her to leave the classroom as she is the one undermining the lesson. " YOU ARE A DESTRACTION". Btw, I would advise not giving writing as a punishement as it isn't going to work in your favor. --> If they talk, give them 3 strikes.. then they are moved to the opposite sides of the room. They don't like this as it creates unwanted attention by their peers. It works!!

Sometimes I make the students stand up and finish their conversation, or game.

Depending on the age - move one of the girls next to a guy.

After class, ask the temp. what she is thinking?! Does she have any experience teaching? What planet is she from?

I've been giving writing as punishment since I arrived here nearly two years ago and it's always worked like a charm. These are vocational high school students, btw.

The problem isn't so much the students as it is the co-teacher.

Give the co-teacher writing punishment. Tell her, "Now you have writing punishment too!"

Establish the boundaries. She's a temp. Justpolitely explain that while you are teaching, you except certain standards. If she doesnt like that, she can do all the teaching. Full stop. Just front her. Just tell her. You're leaving anyway and she's a temp. Just do your stuff. I'm sick of treading on the precious egos of inadequate teachers.
