Is it this bad for Candians and everyone else or just us Americans?

18 months ago the won was near 800 for a CAD. Now it's near 1200. Totally sucking for Canadians.

And it DOESN'T suck for everyone else?!?

Apparently not for NZers, as someone jumped on my case for not specifying $ as $US in another thread. I can't speak for the world, though.

I sat beside this Korean man on the flight from Korea (oddly enough), and he told me that it would even out by April.

I don't know how he knew this, but he backed up this claim with some facts that I couldn't understand, and that was enough to convince me.

He said the dollar would be at 1000 by April. If he's right, that would be super. I'm heading back (hopefully) to Korea in March.

Minerva was the Roman name of Greek goddess Athena. She was considered to be the virgin goddess of warriors, poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, crafts, and the inventor of music.

You are correct.

But do you know who he is in terms of current Korean culture?

Maybe he's talking about the fact that sooner or later, the dollar will implode and go down very quickly. In which case, the US$, the won may become relatively safe by comparison. But IMHO, think we'll come closer to W2500 won than W1000 in the near future. But sooner or later it will come back down, later than sooner.

The Dow has dropped down to the 7000 level, and some "experts" see it skidding as low as 5000 (and don't want to even contemplate it getting worse than that.)

Most analysts now expect that it will continue to sink throughout December and don't expect it to start rebounding till February.

My brother took early retirement from Verizon and thought he was in good financial shape. As of now, he's lost more than 50% of his nest egg.

Unemployment in the U.S. will steadily rise (till Obama gets some huge government projects going...)

Some experts think the won/dollar exchange rate will hit 1600 before improving - and (hopefully) at some point it will strengthen as fast as it weakened.

No, I don't. I'm too lazy to look it up on the world wide web. Is he some Korean economic guru? Or the lead singer of some cool K-Pop boy band?

I think running is the worst thing you could do right now as you really lose. Just save Won in your Korean account and wait it out to see if you can get a better xchange rate.

True, and what will you be running back to in the US, the UK or wherever else? With rising unemployment you'll be looking at a low paying McJob or staring at the walls in your parent's basement for months on end. If you can find a job in Japan I guess that would be the best thing to do if you really are set on leaving. The entry level salary over there is 250,000 yen a month. I checked on xe.com - that is over 1800 a month. Once you deduct tax you are still looking at more than 1600 a month. I have friends working as Lawyers in London whose net monthly salary is less than that.

But who knows, chances are that by the time you work your notice and get that job in Japan, the Yen will start to go down, and the Won will be rebounding and you'll wish you hadn't uprooted your life here. I still think it's worth seeing how things play out over the next 6 months at least - for me, all the variables are way too up in the air to be making any big decisions about my work and life.
