My boss has been doing it a lot lately. In particular, he makes a big deal of it with the new teachers. On their first has a word with them. He points out that as Korea is a confucist society, they should ubderstand they will be expected to co-operate when told to do things not in their contracts. The thing is, my K friends tell me that it's an out-dated philosophy that no one actually adheres to anymore.
Once, he even accused us of 'hiding behind our contracts'. I'll be glad to see the back of this place. |

A lot of bosses try the 'This is Korea style' line when what they mean with that is putting up with the boss' BS is Korean style, not what ridiculous things the boss actually wants to do. |

술 and 주 have the same meaning. One is native, one is from Chinese (酒) |

Unlike us, the SKs believe a contract can be changed at will. So, yes, standing on your contract can create friction. A changeable contract isn't really a contract, in my opinion. If the horse can be changed in mid-stream, why put a value on the horse? Makes sense to me, but they don't see the world this way.
SKs' attitudes toward contracts and promises in general are great reasons TESOL grunts should form a union, as laughable as that idea is. |
