My friend was trying to send my computer to me, and she tried the post office, which was the cheapest (not cheap, but the cheapest), and she was told that the parameters of the box were too large to send to Korea. From their explanation, the computer itself is too large to send to Korea. Now, the computer isn't that large. It's a typical HP size computer (which means pretty small), but does anyone have any advice on how to best ship this thing here. It's a pretty powerful computer, and I've been aching to have it here, and I certainly don't want to buy a new one when this one is definitely top of the line, for me at least. I need to know soon or she's going to give up on sending it to me.

Get a friend who knows computers to dismantle it for parts and mail the parts....this is far easier than it sounds....

You'll have to then build it again here and buy a case(cheap).

Joke responses really, really don't help here. It's a legitimate question and the problem is that the post office says it's too big (either in or out of a box). Post office is cheapest at about $150, while everywhere else seems to be about $300 or so.

Same for me....just have the computer be taken apart and the most valuable parts mailed to you...computers are just a collection of parts put inside a case.

Shouldn't cost you more than $50 to mail the parts.

Unfortunately, I don't have anybody at home that knows how to do that. I mean, I could do it if I was there, but I'm not there.

Just have them take it down to the local service center. I'm sure they will take it apart and box it up for them.

Not sure how much that would cost, but I can't imagine it being more than $50.

Take it to a computer shop, get it disassembled. Put the components in some static free bags, bubble wrap and then ship the necessary stuff all at once, 2-3 boxes should comprise everything. Just of course dont write true values on the package to avoid customs holding it.

What has your computer got that you cannot live without? If you are a newbie you can buy a cheap computer here. Put all the info you really need on a flash drive and download it to a new computer. Dont waste your time and money mailing something like that. PC rooms are all over the place here if you really need porn fix. Laughing

Several reasons. I went through a lot of work to get that computer to the level that it is. To replace it would cost me about $3500 for a new one of comparable ability. It also has a business on it that I maintain for a company back in the states. The software for maintaining the company's site is a nightmare to transfer to another computer (not my choice, but the choice of the company that went that direction some years back).

Even if I got a less stellar computer, that means shelling out about a thousand bucks for a Korean language computer that I'm sure there's an English version of Windows I can get, but so far I have access to nothing that allows me to do that.

umm... a pretty much top end (non-gaming quad core rig) will only run a hair over $600. Install your windows CD and away you go. English windows IS available here at any of the several Microsoft stores (or you can always download a "unauthorized distribution" copy).

If it is a mini-tower you can ship it EMS (but it is not cheap).
If it is a full size tower, take it to a computer shop and gut it. The parts inside will fit into a box that is about 14" x 14" x 4" deep.
Leave the power supply at home.
Cases (with power supply) here are about $50.

I'd never buy a computer that wasn't also a gaming rig.

NO! You cannot just disassemble an HP and expect to stick it in any generic case. Well, technically you can, but it will be a PITA as HP (and all the major manufacturers) uses custom sized parts. Ever pop open a Sony and see the size of the power supply? That's not something you can buy off the shelf. Same goes for the unique placement of ports, drive connectors, usb headers, cable lengths, etc.

Just try another carrier besides the US Post Office. That's the next logical step before thinking about dissassembly.

The most valuable things inside are likely to be a graphics card, the processor, ram, and Hard drives. Aside from a goofy HP mother board and HP powersupply, he shouldn't have any problems since those parts are universal.

I do wonder what the hell you put in it to make it cost $3500?

A gaming rig is just a fast PC with a decent graphics card. Nothing more nothing less.

I strongly suggest you just have the parts shipped over and build a new one....download a pirate copy of WIN xp and use your cd key...
