I have seen some posters here saying that with the won where it
is, that it is time to leave Korea and head home. But to where?
To what job? To what future?

This economic crisis is getting pretty scary. Thousands upon
thousands of people are being laid off and fired. At least here we
have jobs. And THAT is important. I think the more important
question should be: Can I hold onto my present job in Korea with
all the unemployed from western countries who may come over
here looking for work?

BTW, all these new immi regs might be in our favour. These jobless
masses will be headed off at the pass. I love immigration.

Also, I am sure the won will not be so low for ever. Although I think
it will take longer for it to spring back than in the IMF period, it will
come back.

Why would they come to this particular country with its low-paying jobs, deflated currency and... well, the streets aren't exactly festooned with "We Love Waegook!" banners. So why here? Has McDonalds stopped hiring in the West?

I don't think it's time to bail, because you can't hide from this crisis unless you are a rich person who holds part of his wealth in physical gold, other material valuables, and owns land to reside on. If you think it's time to bail, then pick the country of your choice, because all of them pay blue collar wages except some in the Middle East that require many years of experience and a MA in ESL or English. Korea ESL pay is almost blue collar with today's cost of living. A decent paying job today would be $60,000 or more a year, preferably something in the lower 6 figure range to be realistic. A $100,000 a year job today would be the proverbial $40,000 a year job the American college grad of the 1970's and 1980's typically landed. Companies did a whole lot more with entry level and middle career people back then. Today the already established guy who graduated 20 to 30 years ago typically makes big 6 and 7 figures. This is not the pattern nor norm in our generation.

It seemed like for a long time that Korea is a place to hide from economic and job market woes at home, but Korea is not starting to see negative profits in it's companies while spectators profit from currencies through manipulation using large sums of cash via computerized brokers. Anything can happen in the currencies market.

If you don't have to sell won anytime soon, then don't worry, but keep an eye out for the magic 1000 or even 1100 to the US dollar. I got a gut feeling there's going to be a turnaround at some point in the next year due to a crashing US dollar value. That greenback can't keep packing the powerful punch with how commingled and downward spiraling the US economy really is. It's falling into a failed state and there's no turn around of that fact any time soon. Not sure what the dollar will be worth in the event of a US system collapse. That remains to be seen and experienced as much as I hate how it's obviously coming to a bank near you. Expect many painful gyrations and periods of unemployment that will leave you quite broke. I feel insecure about this.

I could go back to supply teaching about 175 working days of the school year and get Employment Insurance for July and August, but why would I do that?

Also, I can walk in 3 different directions from my apartment to the orangeeee gimbap restaurants for kimcheeeee jigae in 5 minutes, and you cannot put a price on that, now can you?

Well, if you do have student loans find another place, the won will go down, especially around January. I will predict it will fall to 1540
then 1600 then 1899, then some days it will be at the two thousand mark and will stay there for a year. You better be careful, send back money asap!~

I still have a hefty amount of student loan to pay off that's for sure and so far I have made very little effort to pay it off, but since I've decided to start on my Master course this coming semester I am just going to let it roll. I don't foresee the demand of els jobs in korea is going to exceed the suppy any time soon due to the strict visa regulations and BS we're facing every day are not going to attract long-term stayers.

Korea's gonna be looking very attractive for alot of people cos it's so easy to get a job. Employment rates are soaring (in the UK at least) and Korea will be an easy escape for people who dont fancy battling it out over the shittiest jobs.

Remember that a lot of people dont do TEFL for the money but the experience, and also remember that most people who go to Korea dont have the first clue of what it is actually like.

Working those kinds of service-oriented jobs is really difficult. Even if working at McDonald's 40 hours per week paid exactly the same as teaching English (probably about 30 hours per week), it's not too difficult to figure out which one is more appealing.

China. I don't need to save money, I just need to support myself. And it isn't like at 2,000,000won I'm saving money here anyway.

If you are so confident of this why aren't you shorting lot's of options on the won? Since you have some information that others don't you are obviously in prime position to make a heap of cash off this situation.

Put simply, NOBODY knows what any given currency is going to do at any point in the future. You can make educated guesses about what may happen but you can do the same with a lot of things. And you certainly can't say this or that will definitely happen so just shut up.
