I recently moved in with my korean girlfriend and I helped put down the deposit on an apartment. The place is in her name.
Thigns didn't work out and when I tried to break up, she said she was going to keep my part of the deposit as "payment" for the time she wasted in our relationship.
I have an electronic record of that money being deposited into her account, and the money is labeled as "loan".
Can she really take my money just like that? |

That blows, dude. I don't have any experience in this department, but maybe a phone call from a lawyer would set her straight? I've been told to be leery of cops myself, but worse comes to worse, don't let this go unreported. Then at least there will be a record of her craziness. Some dude might thank you for that in the future. |

Try to embarrass her somehow. To her family or friends. She will try to save face. I think the law is on your side with the "loan" transfer, but I wouldn't even know how to start. Was it a lot? |

moving in with a Korean without marriage is TOTALLY taboo here. You should have understood this.
Please play by the rules when living in Korea. |

There's not much you can do. Anywhere else you could sue, but here no court will side with a waegook over a Korean. If I were you, I'd put it down to another learning experience and move on. Also, try to recoup some of your losses by bonking her as much as possible. (If you have to, pretend that you still love her.) |

Maybe. One of my Korean colleagues got divorced after a 2-year marriage to a Korean woman. The woman's parent argued that she should keep the marital home because she had "wasted her time". Also, keep in mind that saving face does not apply when it comes to dealing with foreigners, who are, essentially, barbarians polluting the beautiful country---and now breaking the hearts of the local maidens. |

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.
I am a bit curious. How do you mark a transaction as "loan?"
I don't have any advice to give you on whether you will be able to get your money back or not. I do know that foreigners can sign contracts for a home. If she insists on having it in her name, I'm sure you could get the real estate agent to state in the contract that you are due a certain amount of the deposit. That way, you could get the real estate agent involved. If that didn't work, you could take the contract to your local gu office. |

It reminds me of the eighties when I used to be young and eat Captain Crunch while watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and think Michelangelo was just the coolest, dreamiest mutant turtle ever. Which, I guess, is something I like. I do recognize how potentially annoying recycled trendy words can be so I won't tell you to go screw. I am going to call you dude, though. Just once.
Chill, dude, all's fair on the internet. Even sentence fragments. |

If you have an ARC, why would you put your apartment in her name in the first place?
With an ARC, you have the right to get your own apartment- hence use your own money to pay for it.
Even in the US, people know you never put your girl's name on the lease...you are asking for trouble.
The best thing you should've done was get the apartment in your name, using your own deposit. Thus if things go south, you don't lose anything, except the furniture she brought with her into the apartment.

When we decided to move in together, I still had my apartment with a lease. Her apartment lease had just expired. So, she went ahead and found a new bigger apartment first and moved there. I couldn't move there until after I found someone to take over my old place.
After I moved out, I gave her half the deposit for the new apartment.
So, when I brought up that I was thinking about breaking up, she pulled the "I'm keeping the money" card. When I told her that she couldn't do that, because on the wire transfer, when it asks you to write a description of the transaction, I put loan and that I'd get my money.
She then said she'd call the police and tell them I was trespassing in her room. All of my possessions are in that room, and if she had called the police, I would be thrown out on my butt with no where to go.
I don't know what I can do. Without that deposit, I can't find a new place to live.
Its like I'm an indentured servant. |

Breaking up with someone who has your money is never very smart---anywhere in the world. Tell her you've changed your mind and realized she's the only one for you. In a few months, try and get the money; tell her that you need it to buy an engagement ring, or put a deposit on your future house back home, etc. Once you get it, do a runner.
Anyway what kind of apartment and arrangement is this where all your stuff is in her room and the police gets called in if you go there? |

Hey, the guy is trying to solve a problem right now and doesn't need the revised history. Besides, how many of us men have not lost it when we had an especially hot piece? |
