US-Japan missile defence shield 'fails'
A Japanese warship failed to shoot down a dummy missile in a test of a defence shield being developed with the United States to protect against a possible North Korean attack, officials said on Thursday.

The Chokai destroyer tested the US-developed sea-to-air Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) off Hawaii on Wednesday but "failed to shoot down a dummy ballistic missile", the defence ministry said in a statement.
Washington and Tokyo have been working jointly to install a shield against possible attacks from North Korea, which fired a missile over Japan's main island in 1998 and tested an atom bomb in 2006.
Japan successfully tested the SM-3 interceptor in December from the Kongou destroyer in waters off Hawaii, becoming the first US ally to intercept a target using the system.
In September, Japan successfully tested the new US-developed Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3), a surface-to-air missile that tracks and hits incoming targets.
Japan plans to complete its missile shield by early 2011, deploying the PAC-3 missiles at 11 bases and setting up SM-3 missiles on four Aegis warships.
Despite its pacifist constitution, Japan has the world's fifth biggest military budget and maintains more than 230,000 military personnel. |

Agreed. Seems the system has proven effective in other tests, but they are still not at 100%. Some kinks are still being worked out.
Contrary to what Putin had said some years ago, you can "shoot a bullet with a bullet". The system will continue to be refined. |

That's especially important if the ballistic missile shield is to work: In the real world, an incoming ballistic missile is likely to deploy decoys to 'fool' the interceptor. If a number of small, independently targeted kill vehicles can be packaged on an interceptor booster, it increases the likelihood that all the objects in a "threat cluster" can be destroyed |

Chris: this represents an R&D project and no one advocates deploying it as is.
On the other hand, many, apparently many like you, unreasonably seize on any failed test to advoctate shutting down the entire effort once-and-for-all. The Russian govt, too, consistently argues against any further steps toward developing this capability.
Why is that? What do you fear? |

I'm with Gopher on this one. I would rather have one that works ok than nothing at all. And if they had that many tests end up a success, that is a pretty good thing. This can have many other applications too, with space junk starting to come down from orbit
FOr seosan08. I'm just wondering how you didn't find a way to blame this test failure on gay people... |

I'm curious what you mean by "these things" as last I checked, this is the first time in history someone has tried to create this. I guess some people might have tried to set up a sling shot defence system to ballista, but I don't know.
I feel this could actually have some very useful properties. It just sounds like you are the type to say stop exploring the Atlantic Ocean because it hasn't worked yet back in the 1500s... |

the fact that america is making this makes me feel uneasy about where they are headed. They seem paranoid to the max and the very fact that they are trying to build these anti missiles shields is a dark path they are leading the world. These missiles have failed numerous times, the patriot missiles have failed in Israel, Iraq, you name it. Waste of money for something that even if it does work, people will wish it didnt work ebcause they will be the ones alive during the nuclear winter, radiation in the wind, rain etc etc. Completely useless, but, it gives the americans comfort becuase its them vs us. |

Right, its completely irrational to build a nuclear missile shield in E. Europe and in Japan, because, you know, all the countries in those regions are responsible and int'l law-abiding. |
