|
|
| I've asked to teach after school classes at my public school next year, but my school seems to have a weird system in place. The students who enroll in any after school class pay 40,000 won, and that covers 20 hours worth of classes. I'd only be getting 2,000 won/hour per student. Teaching 10 students for a measley 20,000 won, which would then be taxed, hardly seems worth it. What are the terms of your after school classes? How many hours do you teach a month, how many students do you have a class, and what is the pay like? |

| I teach a couple of after school classes a week and get the standard 20K/class. That's what the contract says (GEPIK) and I don't have a choice as it's there in black and white. I often wonder about all those guys who say they have special terms regarding their after school classes and are often paid at a much higher rate. How exactly do they negotiate such terms, and why does the school agree to pay them at a rate much higher than what the contract says. (especially, when they are obligated to teach an exra 6 classes a week at the said rate). While I don't doubt that it happens, I don't think it is as widespread as it appears on Dave's. Then again, every 2nd guy on Dave's is pulling 4mill/month teaching 3 hours a week with 9 months paid vacation. |

My normal contract hours are 8:20-4:20.
I teach a supplementary class from 3:30-5:00.
Even though I only go over my contract time by 40 min., I get paid 30,000 for each hour. I also do this non-sense "English Plaza" where I basically go on field trips (movies, noraebang) with the kids and get 30,000/h as well.
90,000 to watch Mamma Mia...hmmm...almost worth it |

How did you get 30,000/hr? How many kids are in the class? Do the kids pay for the class or are you paid by your school? |

A lot of GEPIK schools seem to pay 30,000 for OT now, even though 20,000 is in the contract. It depends on the school, but most people I know who work in the GEPIK program get 30,000. Your school can always go above that if they so desire. I get 50,000 an hour for a debate class I do after school; although that is mainly because the class is later in the evening and lasts for an hour and a half, so I think my school felt they had to offer more to convince me to do it (oh if only they'd known, I'd have sold myself for a packet of biscuits |

I get 30k/h because, since the class goes past 4:20 (thus, past my contracted hours), classes are 100% optional to do and rates 100% negotiable. Knowing that, my school offered me 30k/h for each hour to make it worth my while.
I'm paid by the school. For the English Plaza thing, I'm also paid by the school, but they get their budget directly from the local office of ed. |

| I teach 4 teacher training classes per week at 17k for a 40 min class... Though I also negociated pushing back our winter camp for a week so that I could have 10 days vacation during the break (not supposed to have more than 5 days off in the first 6 months of my contract) so I don't mind the lower pay so much... |

| One school offers 30000 a class and the other pays 25000 a month per student which adds up to about 400000 a month. |

I'm in SMOE...so here's my experience.....I talked with my co=-teacher...the one who's the head teacher...who's also my pal...I also dropped hints before hand and made comments about the pay from other programs...
However she took the iniative when discussing pay and told me she got me 23.000 won a child. She did it becuase she likes me as a friend or so she infers...
Just remember to keep on the good side of your staff... and if they ask about getting info from other schools based on their after school class rate..make sure to give them the school phone numbers of friends who has schools that pay alot. |

How many vacation days do SMOE teachers get?
Also, I've never heard of that 6-month stipulation you mentioned.
Is that standard for SMOE contracts? |

I've taught through EPIK and through SMOE and both times the going rate for my time was 45K per "hour" (45min) I've never had a contract that required extra classes. Unless your contract says otherwise your not required to do them and the pay is not fixed.
I would very nicely bring the low pay to the attention of your supervisor and explain that this is not a common practice(among english teachers you have spoken to) and that you would like the higher rate and, again nicely, that for only half of what you expected it seems like it's not worth your time.
Or just do it. |

SMOE teachers get 21 days per year, but the contract says that you're not allowed to take more than 5 in the first 6 months unless your principal agrees. That was standard with the Aug. 2008 contract... Not sure about others... I wanted to take more of my vacation earlier, the principal wanted teacher training classes, so we both got a good deal... |
