my coordinator mentioned to me that the school still has a bunch of money unspent on books and other expenses related to their FT program (that would be ME)

she welcomed any input I may have on books and other materials I'd like to buy.

Which is great news.

At orientation some people recommended two book to me, which they said are excellent for very low level students

1) side by side
2) Up n away.

btw. my VP has seen the side by side books and says even the first one is too difficult for our students...
well I'm going to get it anyways.

anyways . any suggestions/input on things to buy/get is MOST welcome.

please keep in mind I deal with technical HS students.. often the least skilled and least motivated of the entire bunch (but I like them anyways... they're "mine" at least for now)

one of the biggest problems I face is getting them interactive and playing certain games so if you know of great materials fof this, I'd be interested too.

I was even considering buying some classic Monopoly games (In english of course) and using those as a "play in class reward" once in a great while.

( I figured it'd be motivating and they'd have to play in English, since the cards/instructions etc would all be in english)

My issue with "Side by Side" series is that the difficulty increases a bit too fast.

You have to slow it down and do extra curricular exercises concerning the topic of the chapter you are in.

Then Side by Side is a decent series to go by.

for the true beginners. I would recommend a bilingual book. its important they understand the vocabulary before they can really use it.

They most likely already have bi lingual books. The OP asked for books that are for him/her to teach. How does a foreigner use a bilingual book unless he/she is bilingual.

Also there are many other ways of teaching vocabulary and comprehension besides translation.

As for the original question, Up and Away is garbage. Stay clear of it.

You might want to look into a book series that has a lot of teacher aids. I know it is old but I liked the Let's Go series. It wasn't that bad.

I suggest that you go with the librarian to a local bookstore and peruse through the material.

Remember, that choosing a book or series also depends on your teaching style and perfered methodology.

Are you more inclined to lecture? Do you prefer the communicative approach? Do you relate more to the Audio lingual method?

All methods and approaches have their strengths and weaknesses just as teachers. Try to find something that relates to your style and approach.

I would also suggest that you might want to get some books for actual teaching. Like "How languages are learned," by Nina Spada or "Teaching by Principles" by Brown

These resources might help you build better lessons around any material.

I'd also suggest you might want to try looking at some books before purchasing -and looking at leisure, without being in the bookstore. You can find many HERE, look under EFL Books and other categories. Look under Korea and get Tell Me More, sounds like something that you are looking for vis a vis activities.
