At my High School, a number of students have come forward and expressed interest in either studying English in Canada or attending a Canadian university.

The most recent student is a girl who is very active in my classes and speaks English very well as a consequence of studying in New Zealand for a year. She wanted information about attending a University in Canada or the US. Specifically:

- How much her grades mattered and how much the final (Korean) exam mattered.
- She wanted to know if she had to write American SATs for entering an American University.
- She wanted to know how to get into a typical Canadian University.
- The cost of tuition (I told her it was higher for international students).
- The possibility of getting a dual citizenship/Visa in either Canada or the US in order to study (she wants residency, the ability to work and the ability to study for an unspecified amount of time).

Is there a good information resource on this? In English or in Korean?

I'd like to help her out but I'm far from being an expert.

Any help would be great.

Here are some web sites that may help:

www.cic.gc.ca/EnGLIsh/study/index.asp

www.studyincanada.com

www.studycanada.ca

www.schoolsincanada.com

There are more if you need them. Just google "study in Canada".

Pay lots of money and have a TOEFL score near or above the entrance requirements.

More than websites, I would go to individual universities' websites and look up their specific requirements. She should be doing some legwork on her own, and there's not enough specific information about her to make good recommendations anyways.

Every school is different. For example, my University doesn't appear to require SAT's (I would call before I sent in my application). It does ask for documentation for all transcripts degrees, diplomas, etc. But if I were a foreign student applying, you'd better believe I'd list my ranking on my own country's college entrance exam (provided it was decent).

Dual citizenship isn't allowed by Korea. Permenant residence to the US at least is very difficult to get quickly. Most foreign students that I knew in the US came on a school visa which allowed them to work on the university campus for very limited hours. To get that visa, they needed an I20 form, which is sponsered by a school, and in order to get that, you must have proof that you can afford the university tuition and living expenses. The website gave a specific amount, 26000 US dollars for one year.

All of this information was available on the website, as well as a lot more info. http://www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/Inter.htm on the left is a bar, click on 'international' to see more info. As each university has different requirements, specifics can't be given. Also, does she have family in one or both countries? What level university is she looking for? Almost all major universities have foreign student programs, with information online.

My only advice is that before she goes, she needs a clear plan of study and a clear path to achieve her goals. Anything else is risking a lot of money.

Just have her go to a YooHakWon (the travel abroad agencies). They'll do everything for her, including the supply of the basic information she is now fishing for.

I know one at HongDae Station in a convenient location: Called Vision Educational Consulting (YooHak/YoHang). 4th floor of the building connected to exit 1. There's a sign in the window with the phone number.

Good luck to her.

Great stuff. I condensed all of this into a letter for her.

I'm going to keep it on file and give the same letter to every student who asks. A lot of my students want to study in Canada. I think it's a good thing.

Just look for the international student section of the admission website. Most major universities have them because they love the international money or being "cosmopolitan"
