Happened to mention to a girl on the phone at Presidents Choice that my wife and I live in Korea.
She went nuts. Said that is "completely against policy", illegal, etc. since I no longer have residency (been here two years). She said they have to close my account and send a check to the Canadian address they have on file (the mother-in-law).
I pretended I was desperate and need the money for Christmas, so I asked her to send it out here. She finally relented and agreed if I can get all the bank info from Nong Hyup. But she told me a bank transfer will be costing me over $70!
I have a few days to decide what to do, and it is a REALLY hard decision. I know I'll make money on the exchange, but then I still have to send money to the family for Christmas, and seventy bucks!!! |

I'm a bit confused. I thought that Presidents Choice was a no-name brand for Real Canadian Super Store. Is it an actual bank?
And if so, most banks I know will allow foreigners to have an account... much less Canadian citizens that are living overseas.
CIBC knows that I haven't lived in Canada for 7 years - 'twas never a problem. |

I don't think they'll let a tourist on a tourist visa open an account. I think they usually want a SIN number, or appropriate non-tourist visa with a SIN equivalent, and a Canadian address. At least that's what Canadian banks usually asked from me. Where you actually live, is little concern to them. |

not true.
Last time my wife and I went to Canada she opened up a savings account at RBC. All she needed was her passport. She had come to Canada on a travellers visa. They even sent her atm card here in Korea. We told them she was planning on immigrating in the future, but there is no way they could verify that. |

You click on the link and comes up with this:
Are you a Canadian Resident?
You are eligible to open a Personal Deposit Account in Canadian dollars if you are:
a Canadian resident, or
a Non-Resident who is emigrating to Canada, or coming to work or study in Canada
Answering this question will help us determine whether you are able to open a new account online and to streamline your application process.
What I want to know, if a tourist, with no intend of actually ever living in Canada, can walk into a Canadian bank (by himself) and open an account with little problems, with no bending of the truth? |

I've been over her for 5 years and my BMO Mastercard is aware that I am a non-resident of Canada. Never been a problem for them, or the Royal Bank. |

Toronto Dominion got me an account with a driver's license and a social security card from the US. Used it for several years before the dollars went par and I sold my property up there. Made $$$ |

When I click accept I get this https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/RBC:SS6ZxawWZA8ANCDASdM/cgi-bin/deposits/pda/apply.cgi/start information about signing up online, or going in person. My link says nothing about resident or not... that I can see. Mind providing a link to that page?

I don't think that has anything to do with the OP's question though. |

Thanks everyone, I'll have to call CIBC about this. They are whole owners of President's Choice Financial so if they allow some of you like CaptainKorea to have accounts while living over here than they need to allow us as well.
I'm so mad though that they tell us now.
It is a joint account with my wife and I. She's a Canadian citizen and I'm American. I'm really debating pulling the money out anyway to try to earn big on the 1200/$1.00 exchange rate. We have to decide if $70 is worth the risk.
And maybe if we ignore President's Choice for a bit they will just leave us alone. |
