I was looking in the DVD shops at numerous shows I have never heard of (been in Asia a long time), and wondered which are good or not. The best one I know about is "Curb Your Enthusiasm." I really enjoy that one. "Boston Legal" is not bad. I watched some of that in Korea. Here in China I don't have TV worth watching, just a DVD player. I know "Prison Break" and "Lost" are popular, not sure if I'd be into them. Heard some people rave about "Arrested Development," not sure if I'd like it. My school-provided computer is crappy, so I can't watch videos online, having no sound. I've done a little searching on the internet but it's not easy to tell what I might like, and would rather not waste money on something I dislike. Thinking I'd buy a DVD or two of good TV series if anyone can recommend a solid one and give a reason why it's worth getting.

The Wire. Best show I've ever seen. More like great literature than a tv show at time. long story arcs, characters have to compromise for everything they get(ie real life) and great character acting. A thing of beauty.

Ah, have heard of The Wire, and good things. Will look in the shops. Thanks for the idea.

(PS.. China has very good DVD selections, so don't be hesitant on suggestions.)

In addition to the Wire and Curb, any HBO show is a safe bet. The Sopranos (the best American drama as far as I'm concerned). Flight of the Conchords(comedy from New Zealand). Mr. Show (Sketch comedy with all of the 90's alternative comedians popping by). Larry Sanders (if you like curb you should like this one a lot) Deadwood (Western, and pretty good). The first season of Six Feet Under is decent, but I lost interest after that. It's written by Alan Ball who wrote American Beauty.

I'm also a nerd and have a soft spot in my heart for anything by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly.) Firefly is the best of the bunch, it's basically a western in space.

I similarly got interested in The Shield back when I was home in 2003 and one critic mentioned how great this show was so I bought the first season on DVD. Boy was I NOT disappointed and then I started downloading religiously. It just concluded after season 7 and it was a fantastic run, not one season was a letdown, absolutely great writing and acting. I guarantee you'll love it.

You might consider downloading stuff at work onto a portable hard drive and then watching it on your home computer, if you have one. Granted, your DVD selection is great, but for ongoing shows it's nice to get the episodes as they come out sometimes.

My favourite shows from the last ten years are...(in no way ranked by quality, some of these are superb and others just kinda fun)

Science Fiction: Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Firefly (and its movie, Serendipity), season one of Heroes

Crime Dramas: the Shield, Sopranos, Brotherhood, Damages, Sons of Anarchy, Dexter, Intelligence, Criminal Justice

Drama Dramas: Mad Men, John Adams

Comedies: CYE, Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Office, 30 Rock

News: Daily Show, Colbert Report

Battle star galactica is the best Sci-fi tv show of all time and many critics would agree...firefly is another good sci-fi show...it lasted one season, but amazingly good show by the creator of buffy.

Speaking of Battlestar, not long now: http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=PzZX9d18Ebg

See that whiteboard with the survivor count? That's a lot of dead.

CSI: Las Vegas (Season 1-6)
Dark Angel (Jessica Alba, Michael Weatherly)
Grey's Anatomy (Season 1-3)
Frasier (All)
NCIS (Season 1-5)
Scrubs (All)

The show "Life" is pretty good, but like many shows these days doesn't appear to be destined for greatness. There are probably others but I don't watch a lot of American programming these days.

The Office (UK) >>> The Office (US)

I can't beleive how witty and sarcastic Ricky Gervais' humor is.

Friday Night Lights (NBC??), Survivor (CBS) and Entourage (HBO) are other shows which I download religiously.

Cooking shows are fun to watch. I enjoyed Jamie Oliver's and Rachel Ray's series. Michael Smith's Chef at Home is fantastic. Check out Iron Chef (US) and Gordon Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares.

Look on Wiki for past Emmy award nominees and that will give you some help.[/b]

I second that. It's a real masterpiece. But it probably isn't for everyone. (If you can get past the first episode, you'll be hooked instantly.) I couldn't find the DVDs in Korea. You can still download the episodes from mininova.com, a torrent site.
