Hi All,
I am completely new to the world of teaching but desperate to come to Seoul. However, the agencies I've signed up to are telling me that I'm unlikely to get a job in Seoul because apparently the schools want North American accents.
The fact that I'm british -Indian will most probably not help my case, so I'm just wondering whether anyone would advise me to stick to my guns and push for this or maybe settle for somewhere around Seoul such as Gyeonggi do province?
Thanks

I assume this is for hagwons?
I'd advise you to look for a public school gig, where this won't be an issue (or if it is, won't be to nearly such an extent)
start looking for public school gigs in GEPIK. There are almost always some out there. |

If they say they prefer North American accents, tell them you can wear a clothes peg on your nose. Only joking, (bad joke).
You're right about it being an issue for some hogwon owners that have not evolved yet.
But there are other hogwons in Seoul where the korean owner/managers do live in a 21st century frame of mind. So my advice is, keep trying and you'll succeed! Obama is the president of the USA afterall. Take a leaf from his book.
p.s. I've seen some Indian/Pakistani British teachers out and about in Seoul. They did it, so can you. |

They are saying that so that they can have more options in the jobs they offer you. Most people ask for Seoul, so the rest of the schools in the country have a harder time finding teachers. If Seoul is what you really want, then stick to your guns--you will find a job here eventually. If you are willing to teach anywhere in the country, you will probably find a job much faster. |

Pretty much so. Koreans don't want to learn English; what they want is to be entertained by white Americans. |

OP - I am of Pakistani descent and had no problem at all getting a job.
Ignore the fool who said you can't be Muslim.
I am Muslim, visibly. I have a big beard and shaved head and I got a public school job with no problem at all.
The fact you're Indian is irrelevant, trust me. Be assertive and you'll get a good job. |

Hi Newby
Just to give you some background. When I sent my cv off to recruiter I did not include a photo on it. I am sure you know 99% of employers in the UK dont allow them to stop discrimination ect ect.
Anyway my recruiter got back to me within a day and asked me to send off a photo, which I did. They were happy with it (I didnt hit every branch on the way down from the ugly tree: lol:).
Then they said they needed to speak to me on the phone so i went with the flow.
When she spoke to me she said that basically she was just ringing to make sure I wasnt an Indian who had sent a false photo of myself.
I thought WTF!!!
I know that you will find employment in Korea, so if you get a few knock backs don't let that dishearten you.
WHEN you find the right school I am 99% sure you will have a great time, because you employer will not be shallow and will employ you based on your qualifications not the color of your skin!
But be prepared for some shallow people on the way! PS many Koreans spend half their time trying to make themselves more white, ESP the women so dont take it all personally! |

Who'd want to work at a hagwon anyway ?!!!
Britannia and it's inferiority complex?!! English was invented by the English and not by the Americans.
I don't mean to be offensive but most Brits think American English is laughable. Because they are too polite to say so Americans seem to think they are the gold standard of English.
Wake up Americans, your accent and your country is going downhill fast. Sadly, it's true many Americans are fat, loud, ill-mannered, ignorant fools, and they don't see it at all. Oh dear............
I can prove I'm at a public school anytime. It is accepted, I dress smart. |
