So, Canada ought not because America is? Typical drivel from liberal arts grads.

There are reasonable arguments against a republican system, but none have been articulated here. However, in 2008, a hereditary monarchy determining the course of a major political event is not appropriate. Perhaps we can tweak the system without a major overhaul.

And Kay's lamenting of the limited choices in picking cabinet heads stands tall. Obama is able to pick the best of the best (and will we hope do so) and this is a strength of their system over ours.

US style Republic? Naah, that's too risky and fundamentally easy.

Canadians need something a little more...exotic, or unique.

Might I suggest the following model: Government by Mortal Kombat
1) Get a big stadium
2) Invite anyone to come to the stadium, non-firearm weapons allowed.
3) Lock them in. They must fight to the death in an anything-goes free-for-all massacre madness. The last person standing wins total control and can fill out all available seats with whomever he or she or it(Robots and Aliens are allowed to participate) wants.
4) If anyone has a problem with the leadership, they can challenge for the title of Ruler Of Canada in a deathmatch 2 weeks after the challenge has been issued. Challenger chooses the location and the pay-per-view channel to cover the fight.

See? Problem solved! No need for Queens, Generals, or Coalitions! No muss, no fuss. Very Happy Confused Razz Twisted Evil Wink

Every other nation-state in the western hemisphere but Canada has adopted republican govt. Since the independence era. Canada, like America's holding out against the metric system, stubbornly clings to its colonial status and its legacies...
