Recession or no recession there will always be a need for children to be educated in western countries so there will always be teaching jobs. It's true you have to work a bit harder but that's the reality of having a proper job.

Honestly, I have come to the consclusion that that lots of people want to go back to the west simply because they feel they have something to prove. AS if there were some divine embusement for having a run down house in Iowa with a 1/4 acre lot in the shadow of a meat packing plant.

Ideally a person is saving here and thinking about a stable career position back home for later. There's no race if you are prudent.

As long as the won recovers someday saving here is great. You won't have to live in a dive if you can afford to pay cash for your house in NA. As long as you are educated you should be able to find some kind of professional job. It's win win.

The only crap thing about Korea is arriving here and leaving during a bad exchange rate period. Since the won won't recover until early 2010 coming here soon for just a year is not wise.

I understand what you are saying but I am one of those persons for which the situation is lose, lose. I am well past 35 and there's no chance of me landing any kind of a descent gig back home. I have no work experience in my major field of study and starting over is not an opton. If I were to start over I would invariably exhaust my savings making up for the living expenses that my mediocre job would not addequetly cover and there would be no gaurantee that there would be a payoff barring layoffs, downsizings, etc....
Teaching is not my only deal. I have sidelines and ways of making money all over Asia that are lucrative. Teaching is consistent and thats what I need right now. Most people will go home and pick up their lives somewhere. I have no life there to pick up and it would be an expecise in fultility for me should I try to return. At my age I need something other than the prospect of working 60 hour weeks until my body gives way and I die.
Life might not be better for some people or even most in this situation but it is much better for me. The years I had to make a go of it back in the States were marred with bad luck and more often than not - a bad economy and job market. I'm not going to gamble with those propects again. Life works for me this way and I am way more happier than I have ever been.

The South Korean economy is falling apart. Don't take my word for it though. Just follow the situation here:

Incidentally, so is the American economy. I would rather be in the warm tropics during a wordwide collapse than in Kansas. It's only a 4 hour flight.

I mean.....come on Mack. If you're gonna have to sling hash to make a go of it wherever yougo then you might as well be doing it in Bali, Phuket, (insert favorite tropical sestination) rather than in Oklahoma.

Except that in most of those places, you'd be surrounded by Muslim extremists just waiting for the opportunity to blow you and your lovely family to smithereens.

1. No one knows that the won will recover in 2010.
2. No one knows that the won will ever recover at all.

Coming here for just a year could be fine if you know that you're going to enjoy yourself. And seriously, no newbie with an internet connection is going to be unaware of how much they will earn per month in their native currency- so either they make their decision in spite of the money factor, or for some other reason of their own.

No, the people who talk about staying here for three more years to "weather it out" are the ones I worry about.

That's because you were high. Thailand has the highest percent of gun homicides in the world by far:

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_gun_vio_hom_hom_wit_fir-crime-gun-violence-homicides-firearms

The bullets were whizzing by your head and you didn't even know it. In fact, I got shot three times in one week while on vacation there back in the day. Most of my friends who've visited there have been shot, or shot at, as well.

Thailand sparkling!

Two years ago everyone was upbeat about the economy, now everyone is downcast. People kill themselves and their family members (kids) because they lose a lot of money - or, appear to. Rolling Eyes Daah, eeeh, the economy goes up and down - get the fricken heck used to it - stop whinging about the rolling. Roll with the friggin punches cause it changes for the better and then when it does you'll complain how much work you have to do while bringing in the harvest.
Good economy - we complain. Ohh man, the house price is too high.
Bad economy, Ohh man, it's a cheap house but I have to work longer hours to get it.

People say that we are basically slaves - Unless you strike rich, yeah, yeah, you will always be one of the minions rolling with the tides.
And the tides that be are invariably against you. Normal people doing a normal run for 12 years are not going to become well-off simply because they joined the rush. That's not the way things work, nor the way things are planned.

I've lived through two major recessions in my adult life. Both times I lost - along with pretty much everyone else. This will be no different. Roll with it guys.

Jerking off is disgusting, unhealthy, and bad for your sanity.

If I had to bet my life on someone being a troll on this board, I would bet on Mr-Dokdo. Every post this guy makes is ridiculous.

Maybe Mr-Dokdo is Spliff's revenge for being banned?

Look, if you wish to disagree with whatever I write, let it be on a rational basis. "Troll", "ridiculous", ... where do such words get us?

No offense Mack, but it sounds like you were the one who was high. I lived in Bangkok for a year, and traveled all over Thailand. I never met or knew of anyone who was assaulted let alone shot with a firearm. By the way, I don't use drugs.

I'm actually going to leave. I have savings I'm going to keep here, but I'm tired of working on a gamble. There's no guarantee what I'm making right now will ever be of value. The savings, well, I can't change the past. Anyway, the exchange is just the final straw.
