To whom do I direct my ire for allowing Pakistan to have nukes? How in the hell did that happen? Totally unreasonable for that country to have even sharpened butter knives.

India and Pakistan developed nukes. They primarily did it themselves and for their own reasons.

If you are looking for a list of "complicit" actors in world affairs, be sure to remember Canada.

The Canadian govt and Canadian industry, apparently following Manner of Speaking's "they-have-a-right, too" line of thinking, sold and transferred nuclear technology to India, beginning, I believe, decades ago. India took advantage of the opportunity to develop nuclear weapons. And Pakistan in turn, feeling threatened, developed its own nuclear weapons.

And here we are.

Nonchalant and unrepentant damn Canadians, Mises, as your mocking tone seems to confirm.

You sold them their first nuclear reactor.

I'm no fan of my government. If they do/did wrong, I have no problem cursing them.

Well I am not really cursing them here. I only wish they had not sold that reactor to India.

Not all nations have a right to nuclear programs. We should look at regional politics, for one thing.

I think Canada also supplied the nuclear material used for one of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. Anyway...

Quote:
Canada suspended nuclear cooperation with India following the explosion of a bomb at the Pokhran site in May 1974. The bomb had used plutonium manufactured in a research reactor known as "CIRUS" given to India by Canada.
However, it was not until May 1976, after unsuccessful discussions to upgrade proliferation safeguards, that Canada formally ended its nuclear relationship with India.

After the 1974 Indian nuclear test, discussions on improved safeguards also took place with Pakistan. Again, negotiations were unsuccessful, and nuclear cooperation with Pakistan was terminated in December 1976.

Which, in this case, was a good thing, On the Other Hand. In South Asia's case, however...

And Canada's pullout in India came a little late to matter.

We shouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be the case.

Mumbai Massacre: Is 'India's 9/11' another false flag event?

While American TV News is calling the terrorism in Mumbia "India's 9/11" and blaming radical Islamic terrorists as the culprits, some foreign news is beginning to trickle in with a different story: that perhaps the real culprits behind the terrorism where in fact Hindu and white extremists pretending to be Muslims, a classic false flag tactic.

In an article dated November 23, 2008, just a few days before the recent events in Mumbai, India police exposed how Hindu terrorists with close ties to the leading opposition party carried off a series of deadly bombings with the intent of blaming them on Muslims. From the Belfast Telegraph:

"India is in something of a state of shock after learning from official sources that its first Hindu terror cell may have carried out a series of deadly bombings that were initially blamed on militant Muslims. The revelation is forcing the country to consider some difficult questions.

At least 10 people have been arrested in connection with several bomb blasts in the Muslim-dominated town of Malegaon in the western state of Maharashtra in September, which left six people dead. But reports suggest that police believe the cell may also have carried out a number of previous attacks, including last year's notorious bombing of a cross-border train en route to Pakistan, which killed 68 people. Among the alleged members of the cell are a serving army officer and a Hindu monk."

-- India uncovers Hindu terror group that carried out bombings blamed on Islamists, Belfast Telegraph

And here is a more thorough examination of the incident:

--Indian Police discover RSS Hindu Terror Cell which was pretending to be Muslim‏s, Pak Alert Press

The man responsible for the investigation into these secret links between Hindu extremists and corrupt elements in the India government, Hemant Karkare, India's chief antiterrorism officer, was one of the first casualties in the Mumbai attack. According to Somini Sengupta writing for the New York Times, "...in a bizarre twist, the head of the police antiterrorism unit, Hemant Karkare, killed in the Mumbai strikes, had been in the midst of a high-profile investigation of a suspected Hindu terrorist cell. Mr. Karkares inquiry had netted nine suspects in connection with a bombing in September of a Muslim-majority area in Malegaon, a small town not far from Mumbai." (see Crisis May Shift Indias Political Landscape, and Signs Of An Attempted Coup In New Delhi

With these recent revelations of Hindu violence being blamed on Muslims can we be so sure that India's 9/11 was really the work of Muslims as the western media portrays? Here are just a few of the discrepancies with the Mumbai story that need to be highlighted.

Washington exploits Mumbai attack to promote war on terror

4 December 2008
...

This image serves as a fitting metaphor for her current foray into South Asia, where she is spearheading an attempt by Washington to exploit the blood of the innocent victims in Mumbai to promote the so-called "global war on terrorism" through which Washington pursues its geostrategic interests.

Speaking in New Delhi, Rice pointedly applied pressure on Pakistan, declaring that its government must "act with resolve and urgency and cooperate fully and transparently." For its part, Pakistan has condemned the terror attacks and denied any involvement by its state agencies.

Rice suggested a nonexistent link between Al Qaeda and the Mumbai attacks, declaring, "This is clearly the kind of terror in which Al Qaeda participates." She was later forced to backtrack on the remark, but still declared that those who attacked India's commercial capital and those blamed for the 2001 terror attacks in New York and Washington "move in the same circles."

If there is a connection between the Mumbai attacks and those of September 11 it is to be found in the American response. Seven months after the planes flew into the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Rice described those tragic events as "an enormous opportunity" to "create a new balance of power." Washington now sees a similar opportunity arising from the carnage in India to pursue its interests in South Asia.

While Rice was in New Delhi, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, was in Islamabad, exerting pressure on Pakistan's eight-month-old civilian government and on the country's military commanders.

Mullen echoed Rice's statements in New Delhi, calling on the government of President Asif Ali Zardari to "investigate aggressively any and all possible ties to groups based in Pakistan." The admiral went further, however, declaring that the Pakistani government had "to take more, and more concerted, action against militant extremists elsewhere in the country."

This last reference was clearly a demand that the Pakistani military intensify its operations in Waziristan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and other territories bordering Afghanistan, which have provided support to Afghan forces battling against the seven-year-old US occupation. The American military has carried out its own repeated attacks in the area, killing Pakistani civilians in missile strikes as well as commando assaults.

It is apparent that Washington sees in the Mumbai events an opportunity to bully Pakistan into more effectively doing its bidding in support of the war in Afghanistan, or, should that fail, to justify the escalation of its own intervention.
