One of my coteachers had this nifty idea of collecting pretty little autumn leaves, laminating them, and handing them out as bookmarks to students. anyone have any similar ideas for gifts to give to my favorite students? something cheap but heartfelt...not something i can just buy from insa-dong or something and hand out en masse.
thanks in advance

I couldn't fathom getting my 200 students each something for Christmas. That part is their parents and relatives job. When I was a kid, we did have Christmas parties where we could bring each other gifts, but the teachers never gifted to us since it's impractical.

Don't worry about it since it's not custom to gift to all your students. If you treat one class or an individual special, then they will all find out and you lose credibility and respect.

How lame! That was the only poster? Koreans are all about gifts! As are all children in general (I still have the gifts my favorite teachers gave me - the kids may remember such a kind deed forever!) I haven't decided what to do yet, but I collected these ideas so far:

I am also thinking about printing bookmarks.

In the past I have gotten every student a wrapped christmas present (one year), a stuffed stocking (another year).

I have 87 elementary school aged students, half of whom I've taught for over two years. I know them well.

This year they each get a card with a message written by me, personalized to each of them ("May you, your sister and the rest of your family have a good holiday and a happy new year"/"Hope you get that new bike you want in 2009!"/"Santa would like one of your hamsters but the elves would get jealous and Santa's cat would chase it and try to eat it!"/etc). Also inside the card will be a thin gold bar chocolate from the Netherlands and a picture of me and them together (taken during camera-tourist lesson classes).

VanIslander.

You are going above and beyond. I am sure the children appreciate. I would imagine their parents and your director do also. It surely "adds value" to the acadamy.

Whatever you do, do NOT give them chap stick. Apparently it's like asking them for sex.
