| The answer is to have an impact and cull the species. |
Global warming and/or nuclear winter ought to take care of that. |

| You can quote odds all you like, fact is it will happen eventually. And as I recall isn't our Solar System now passing through a denser part of the galaxy? Meaning it is now that time again for planets to get beaten up by stray rocks. I've heard many times that the Earth is infact overdue an impact. |

| By the time the bigger asteroids in the Milky Way hit Earth, the biggest hemorrhoids in the universe (Israel, Pakistan, and Iran), will have already wiped out mankind. |

| Aren't the asteroid impacts responsible for extinction and evolution. |

| It would be a little premature to call for an "asteroid shield". But a good and important first step is just doing a survey. Based on the risk that emerges from a good survey, one can talk about preventative measures. It's certainly true something big is going to smack into us eventually. |

Bingo. If it weren't for them pesky asteroids the terrible lizards might still be walking around and us little mammals would have never have had a chance.
Here is an interesting question. If all humanity were wiped out which species would you predict had the best chance to evolve in the the earths new intelligent/dominant species? Lets rule out chimpanzees or other monkeys/apes just for fun.
I watched a documentary on meerkats a while back. I bet those dudes, given a few million years could work something out. |

I'm alive today because of the great flu. My grandfather's parents died, he had to move to another city, there he met my grandmother. Many people are alive because of some horrible tragedy. Lots of Korean American kids, for example, are alive because of the Korean War. Try to tell a Korean that plumbing he enjoys came at the cost of his grandmother being raped by the Japanese. The great plague did a lot to advance society. If 1/3 of Europeans died and all those priests were praying like crazy to no effect, what good was this religion thing?
Tragedy can result in positive things but is it a good thing? It's an interesting philosophical question. |
