has anyone ever gotten a box from home from FedEx? This is the first time my family ha sent a box by fedEx. They sent it the first week of December. I got a phone call from a Korean Fedex lady saying I had a box from my family. I had to ask her twice for the full name of the sender. Then she wanted my passport number because she said the box was at customs. This was Monday. Today is Wednesday. Where is my box??? |

I'd ask the customs people for it. |

Did they give you a tracking #? If you have one, go to the closest FedEx Location and give them the number and they will tell you what to do. It seems like you need to pay a duty on the items in the package. Or you need to go to an authorized FedEx hold at location station - it is an option a sender can use if you have a very valuable shipment or the recipient won't be home to release the package ( ie you are at work) and you can pick it up at your convenience. Get a tracking number - without it you are dead in the water. |

Thanks. I called them again today, and the lady said she needed my tracking number. I told her how could I possibly have that when my parents sent it to me? Then, she gave me my tracking number. Strange. Then she said the box was too heavy and had no customs form on it, so they didn't know what was in the box. Then she asked me what was in the box. I said, well, how can I know if it is a gift? I told her usually my fsmily sends coffee, tea, etc., nothing to get all worked up about on their end. Then she said the sender gave no phone number. I told her I know my own Mom and Dad's number, so she told me I could give it to her later. I said no, I will give it to you now. So, DUH, I gave it to her. Then she said OK, I will check it out and if there is something else, I will get back to you. She said the sender paid everything, so I don't need to pay. Again, strange. Also, I told her I never had problems like this with stuff sent by regular postal mail. My parents ALWAYS have a customs form on my boxes, too. Maybe it fell off in transit this time. They have never send a box by FedEx before. I'll be sure to tell them to never sent stuff by FedEx again. Those people are incompetent apparently. Oh, and on Monday they wanted my passport number, so I gave it to them. What gives? |

Ha! I got online and used my tracking number. There were absoulutely no problems with the box making it to Incheon. It has been sitting at Incheon since Monday. So, I guess I have to take back all those bad things I said about FedEx. It isn't FedEx, it's KOREA!!!!!!!!! Korea at its finest being an idiot. I don't see what the big deal is. Geez. Am I going to have to make a trip to Incheon to get my box? The lady on the phone was a totally useless person, too. I mean, if my box made it to Incheon, what's the big deal about sending it on to my school. All I can say is that with Korea post, I never had a problem. People, let this be a warning. Tell your family to never use FedEx to send a box here. It will sit at Incheon forever. |

Yeah, the customs here are really something. My birthday was a few months ago, and my parents sent me a package. Content? 2 boxes of Milk Duds, 4 pairs of boxer shorts, 2 shirts, a book, and a dvd. Total value? less than 100 bucks. What did customs do? Held the package. Opened the package. Opened the personal letter that was IN the package. Wrapped it all back up again. called me, said if I gave them my passport ID, I wouldn't have to pay duties. Called me again, said because I had been here for more than 6 months, I was a resident and owed duties. I checked the customs website, found that I had to be here for more than 1 year to be a resident, we argued, yadda yadda yadda, in the end, I had to pay about 35 bucks tax on my damned birthday present.
Anyway, both times my parents sent me something via FedEx, they opened it, held it, and taxed it. The worst part though was the second envelope. It was a set of my university transcripts in sealed and stamped envelopes, which ended up being delivered late, and OPENED. Yes, they opened the FedEx envelope, but then those ---'s OPENED the damned transcripts!
First, you don't have to go to Incheon, tell them to deliver it to you and you'll pay the delivery guy. Your parents paid to have it shipped to YOU, not to Incheon, they'll deliver it.
Second, complain. To FedEx and to customs (ESPECIALLY if and when they make you pay a huge duty on ubiquitous items.)
Don't take their shit! |

Did your parents fill out the customs form? If not, technically FedEx should have not let your parents send it without the commercial invoice form and a telephone number for the recipient (you) and their own (sender).
I used to work for FedEx and most of the problems with international shipments came from paperwork not being filled out properly and customs. Once a package arrives in a country it is out of their hands and customs can do whatever they feel like with the package. Certain countries are notorious for customs to "lose" or seize suspicious goods.
In my experience Korea was pretty good in terms of getting packages meeting arrival times and clearing customs on schedule. Just make sure your parents go to an actual FedEx ship center, not FedEx Kinkos - they don't have a clue when it comes to shipping. |

My parents ALWAYS put customs forms on boxes they have sent to me through the regular postal service. But for some reason, the FedEx lady on the phone told me there was no form on this box. Makes no sense at all. Maybe it fell off in transit. She was also telling me the box was too heavy at 54 pounds. There is a FedEx kinkos right down the street from my house. Guess I won't even bother going there. The lady also said my parents didn't put their number on the box. But I guess they put my number since fedex called me on Monday. I even gave them my passport number and still don't have my box. |

I am sorry, but the FedEx lady is wrong, I sent a box that weighed 50 lbs to Korea when I moved here.
Call the US number 1-800-GO-FEDEX and ask for an international representative. They will straighten it out. Get the tracking number from your parents before you call.
Seems like your parents used a FEDEX KINKOS, bad mistake.
Good Luck |
