I don't get it- do koreans not get sick? I am looking to come teach english in S korea this January but the school just told me that they don't offer sicks days. Is that normal? They also said thaf if I do miss a day it will be deducted from my pay. Is this something to be concerned about or is this a normal thing in Korea? |

Yeaah I am contacted for 15 took 5 cause I was really sick from the food and they raised hell. You have to be deathly ill and go to the hospital. Then they maybe wont care but hurling, flu, or migraine, Something like that you have to show up and let them send you home |

Find another job - in fact, find another country.
But if you are set on coming here - try and get a public school position - you may get a higher salary at a hagwon but land in a bad one and you see why the extra money wasn't worth it! |

Actually they don't. Ha, ha...
Koreans work harder than any other nationality: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_time Part of it may be not taking sick time off.
Back in the states, we viewed sick days as simply extra days off. Seldom did people ever use them for being sick...the occasional dr. or dentist appts though were other uses for sick days.
It's also specific to the profession. It's not easy getting subs and good subs for that matter.
Can't say I agree with it 100%, but it is the reality. |
