I've used the search and can''t find much about this camera.

What is a fair price to pay for the body and VR kit lens?

I've seen it online for about 680,000 but was hoping I might get in cheaper in the 'grey-market' areas of Seoul. What price should I expect to pay there?

Cheers.

I am currently looking into this camera as well.

In Yongsan I had a reputable guy offer me the kit with VR for 620 000.

And another guy who i was sketched out by offered it for 570 000.

I have seen it on Gmarket for as low as 600 000 with some extras.

Hard to say where and what is the best deal.

The LG shop offers it for 680 000 including tripod, nikon bag and mem card and uv filter.

I am still searching the best deal.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to head up to Seoul this weekend and hopefully bag myself one. I will keep you updated on how much I paid and from where.

before you buy, check out this review. boy knows his Nikons. The D40 is a sweet camera for the price, and the 6.1 MP is ideal for anything up to 20" x 30" prints. Just bought one to replace my ailing D70s. You can pick up a new D40 for a lot less than a D60, and still afford a little better glass to go with it.

Happy shopping

Absolutely agree. Although, I don't quite agree with the part about Ken Rockwell.

Get the D40. The only difference you'll see between the D40 and the D60 is if you zoom into your image at 300-400% or if you print anything bigger than 20 x 30.

You'll save yourself money, money which you can then use to buy more lenses.

Don't buy into all that Megapixel nonsense. If you don't believe me read this:

Instead of going down to the D40, get the D40x. The biggest difference between the D40x and the D60 is the price tag. There are few differences between the cameras.

The D60 comes with a VR Lens which I would imagine to be quite handy though.

Yes, or just get the D40x body with the VR lens if you really want it. They aren't sold exclusively.

So I just back from the Nikon shop in Daejeon with my sparkling new D60 Cool

Camera
VR Kit Lens
Bag
4GB SD
UV Filter

680,000 won.

A bit more expensive than in Seoul but factor in travel costs and the like, I think it's pretty reasonable. Can't wait to get shooting tomorrow.

The D40 and D40x have the same size sensor. More pixels jammed on the same size sensor decreases its sensitivity to light...

D40 with the 18-55 VR lens goes for about 600k(after zero margin discount) on Gmarket:

http://www.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_goods/goods.asp?goodscode=155451169&pos_shop_cd=SH&pos_class_cd=111111111&pos_class_kind=T&search_keyword=d40%20%20%2018-55vr

You could definitely get this price matched at Yongsan, and probably do better at Namdaemun. Make sure you shop for Anam Nikon (정품)... means it'll have warranty from Nikon.

You honestly won't see a difference in your images between the D40 and the D40x. The only big difference is the dynamic range of each camera. But you can always overcome this by using HDR, which is done via software and does what no camera on its own can do.

I'm liking the D60 so far. Even on ISO 800 there is only a miniscule amount of noise. The extra megapixels will be most useful when cropping my terrible shots Laughing

D60 - genuine import - with base lens: 633 000
D60 - genuine import - without lens: 491 000

D60 - gray market - without lens: 515 000

D40x - genuine import - with base lens: 505 000
D40x - genuine import - without lens: 425 000

D40x - gray market - with base lens: 523 000
D40x - gray market - without lens: 455 000

* for some reason, genuine import D40x is actually cheaper than gray market ... dunno how that works out!

both are good cameras and there's not much difference between them. while the D40x would be cheaper, the newer D60 will have better software and image handling.

can't go wrong with either camera.

btw, join the seoul photo club (www.flickr.com/groups/seoulphotoclub) and hang out with other english speaking photogs!

enjoy your camera!!

cheers

was thinking about buying one of these myself.....initially the D60....until I started reading comparisons between the D40 and D60 and there not being much difference between them. Might go for the D40 now. Mind, I`m a relative newbie to these types of cameras Wink

For those with the D40 how are you finding it?
