So tomorrow at 9am is the Korean English teacher exam (임 용 교 시, I think), phase 2, short essay composition.

If they pass this, they're pretty much in. But it is HUGE. I spent all week grading essays of these girls and I'm praying they make the cut. They came in to my office on Saturday night (the University was dark and empty) and we went over the final essays. They've improved so much.

This is one of those things where if they don't make it I've failed them. I'm not smart enough to know how to effectively guide them through it, I've done my best. But, man, I'm hoping we get some good results.

That's always one of the big tests in this profession. There isn't much you can do, you've thrown the ball, they have to take it to the endzone. Best of luck to all.

They get a public teaching position if they pass? I keep hearing slots are ridiculously low because of shrinking student populations and low turnover, and I'm sure the bad economy has only made it worse. What's the passing percentage?

I asked my co-teachers this about a month ago, they told me that the passing percentage for English teachers is like 1 in 20.

In the Cheong-ju area in the first phase I was told forty-some out of 300 plus. However, there are three phases (I hear the third phase isn't so tough).

It will be cut down to about maybe 10 to 20 out of 300 after all the phases. And Cheong-ju is an "easy" region. Gyeongg-gi do and Seoul are much more competitive. One of my best students who commutes from Seoul failed with a score that would have got him through gere.

What was astonishing my best senior, who's totally fluent and spent several years in Australia, didn't pass the first phase. The entire department was shocked she didn't make it.

The first phase is sort of tricky and often not totally clear, as well as being difficult. Plus, they change the test practically every year, apparently.

I have 6 students who are waiting until January to know their results. I was thinking about this, and I put it into practical terms: I would rather have my students pass that damn test than the Lakers beat the Celtics in the nba finals.

In other words, this is serious stuff.
