|
|
If I had known about the friendlier people, easier girls, food, cost of living etc I would've (should have?) left Korea years ago.
It's good in China, lots of lies on the internet about salaries and what-not, I'm making close to what I was making in Korea, for less hours and better students.
(Sorry - this is the Sunday afternoon coming down post) |

2.0 million Korean won = 10,000 Chinese yuan
And there are plenty of 12,000 to 14,000 yuan Chinese jobs these days!
Though I've heard the students are worse and the air ten times more polluted.
Where in China are you? |

Ideally, you want to be in Nanjing, in Jiangsu Province. Lots of unis here, so lots of foreigners (read: foreigner-friendly). |

Meh - still seems cleaner than Seoul to me, but what do I know?
When I was in Korea, 70% of foreigners I met were always complaining about Korea; here, it's the opposite. Foreigners are a lot happier here, no complaints really. |

Really, 70%? I'd say less than 1-in-3 of those I've met over the years complained at all! Though the majority of those at Dave's, yeah (the vast majority of waygooks I meet in Korea have never been on dave's).

THAT's the most important thing, isn't it? Sounds like a good place IN THE SHORT TERM. For a year or two, sure, but get out before you're a frog in the pot. |

I can't personally testify if China is better or not.
BUT, I have heard TONS of people say that Japan/Korea is the same-same...but that certainly is far, far from the truth.
It is incredibly comfortable and relaxing to live in Japan, almost zero stress. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED living in Korea, but I also drank way more than I should compared to Japan, and I realize now that it was because I'd get so wound up just from riding a Seoul subway or having to deal with typical B.S. there all the time.
With China, I've also heard of many people who made the move and made equivalent wages to Korea...and that Chinese people are just a whole lot easy to be around.
All that being said, I still do like Seoul quite a bit though. |

I could never live in China, or at least Beijing, because I remember the old people being far more overbearing there, and the taxi drivers being much more terrifying. |

You are both right. I lived in Nanjing for a year and met English teachers making a lot of money doing Uni work by day and corporate classes at night. The living was cheap and the city is big enough to have things to do and OK nightlife.
And the air is filthy, Chinese people spit and pee everywhere in public, and you're much more likely to get food poisoning from even clean, new-ish restaurants than you will in Japan or Taiwan or Korea.
Overall, the foreign teachers I met there were happy though. |

I lived in Shanghai, and pretty much all these observations above are true. It IS more fun, people ARE more happy, people are friendlier,... but it is DIRTIER, and more CHAOTIC and CORRUPT. Recently, you can make as much money as in Korea, but that wasnt the case when i was there a couple years ago. |

Shanghai was really nice but I did get a lot of stares from people in the park at night, contrasting quite strongly with the welcoming attitude toward my Korean girlfriend before they realised she was with me.
Same thing in Japan now I think about it: people in the bar would be all smiles and friendliness and curiosity with her but act scared at talking to the big foreigner guy. |

Damn, this is the real jajster:
"I" did not start this thread. I failed to log out when I went outside for a bit, in my friend's house, so he got funny and usurped my name.
Not really my style to write about things like this, as some may notice. |

I had way more fun in China but I took 30000 Aussie dolars with me for three years as my salary was only 4500 rmb a month.
For some reason I met more girls there, enjoyed the food more, but the air was filthy. Nanjing did seam like a nice place when I visited there and the air was better than the town I lived in.
For me Korea is really boring as I live in smaller city in the south. |

I had that experience with a southeast asian women in Korea. Everyone was real excited to stare or look at her, try to talk to her, start a conversation, etc.
With me, they hardly gave me a second look (which is basically what I prefer anyways).
---
I'm also recalling a Korean girl in Japan with myself and friend...everyone was so curious about her and Korea...but the two white guys, they could care less about - I think we're already common enough these days, and are probably a bit more standoffish as well.
