Nice to put the onus (a financial one at that) on us, rather than building owners to follow building code, fire safety code, etc.

I thought this kind of advertising was illegal on this site.

Nerine died Sunday morning at 11am (korean time) or like reported in other messages 4am (South African time).

Her heart stopped and the doctors could not start it again. Her heart was very weak due to the stress put on it over the last two weeks and the two previous heart failures.

I spent most of the day yesterday with the family at the funeral home, where we had a small service. There will be another final service Tuesday morning in Mokpo. I'm sorry but as I'm typing this I can't confirm a time yet. I will post a time as soon as I know.

I would just like to thank all the group members for the donations, we are going to put it good use and really needed it. The total amount that were given is 800 000won. This will cover the expenses. The rest of the money will be put in a fund for future use as a Foreigner Accident Fund. The details of the fund will be given as soon as we created it. I also what to thank all the members for praying, we really apreciate it! From the bottom of our hearts, as a family, we want to thank you for the support and encouragement! I know that, even as we don't understand God's will we know that He knows the best!

Traveller, I think the "onus" to which the poster was referring was the insurance salesman's tactful interjection... since the government or whoever apparently does nothing to promote prevention of these horrible situations, like requiring smoke detectors, fire alarms, etc. (not the fund for Nerine!)

Thank you for posting about the situation, and I,too, would like to extend condolences to her family and friends.

I have also been looking for a smoke detector since I don't have one. I've been to Emart and Homeplus and neither one carries them. I've also realized that I've been here 3.5 months and we've never had a fire drill at the hagwon. I don't know about you, but mine is a tall, skinny building and I've never been advised of any evacuation plan, fire escapes, etc... I know in the US and UK we take fire alarms in our dorms/colleges at 3 am for granted, but it makes me sad that such things aren't institutional here.

Anyway, I don't want to hijack the post, but thanks for your info.

If anyone is keeping tabs, I think that is the third foreign English teacher this year to have a fire/arson related death/injury. I'm kind of checking where the fire extinguishers are these days. Kind of making a mental note in my head of where they all are.

Thanks Madoka for posting the link to this thread in a recent thread. I just saw the last poster on this thread was Jongno Guru - damn, he passed after a motorcycle accident a few yrs back, maybe 4?

RIP to Jongno Guru, Nerinne (sorry, I thought her name was Narelle) and Matt Robinson - from what I heard thru their friends and acquaintances they were 3 of the nicest and coolest foreigners to ever live in Korea.

Yeah, kind of stupid they don't sell fire alarms here. My mom bought me a fire and carbon monoxide detector before coming over here. She was worried I wouldn't find one. Boy, was she right about that. So, get a relative to go to Wal Mart and get a good one for you. Save your life.
