MY kids keep hitting each other, in particular this one kids keeps kicking the girls in my class.
I freaked out a little today and scared him and my supervisor i think, but i had to do something, it was getting out of control, last week smae kid kicked me. So corner time didn't help, talking to the kid one on one didn't help... so i screamed threw some stuff around, hopefully that would work... any suggestions... i hate yelling at children... the kids around 9.

Hit the trouble maker. Seriously. Once he gets a feel for what it feels like to get a whack he might STFU and be a good boy.
If you can't adapt to hitting, pick the lil bastard up and put him outside the class. |

| I cannot... CANNOT hit a child. It goes against everything i try and teach the children. I say hitting people is what stupid people do when they can't find the word to properly express themselves... THAT is out of the question, thanks for the interest though. And they wont allow tossing the kd out of class, its either him or me i think... and if i lose him as a student than its me. |

koreans are always saying "dirty"...........so make the little *beep* put his hands up in the air, holding the garbage can.........for as long as it takes for him to cry.
problem solved, its not hitting, just innocent torture. |

How long you been here?
I used to think I couldn't hit a kid, but I used to have one big rule when I taught the kiddies. No fighting. If there is fighting then they can fight with me.
Not saying you have to beat them or anything, I mean they are kids. Just let them know who's the boss of the class. Which it seems isn't you 
Also about putting the kid in the hall. I am sure if you tell your director either the kid goes or I go might put things in perspective. DONT BE A PUSS either. Go home for the day. If your director fires you I'd be surprised.
Hmm I remember another thing I used to do. If you grab someone's hand and press their thumb into the hand it hurts like hell. That should shut the kid up too.

Don't think I hit the kiddies all the time, when I taught I only hit twice that I can remember, and once was when the kid was so nuts he wouldn't come down to earth until he got a little whack on the legs. The other was a kid who kept playing with his "member" and touching the other kids, I thought it was pretty gross so I slapped his hands.
Lastly, about your comment hitting is what stupid people do: do you speak Korean? Do they understand EVERYTHING you are saying? How well are you communicating with them? Obviously not well enough or you wouldn't have posted here. Sometimes logic and communication can't work because the OTHER PERSON is too stupid to listen to you. |

I never thought in a million years I would but I do. I teach middle school boys....after my first year ...and they were pretty good cuz I got me one mean bad voice. 8 years of debating helps. I still found that walking softly and carrying a big stick has it's merits.
I think I have used it twice...but if you are sleeping in my class you get pulled up by your hair....wakes em up real fast. You read comic books in my class you get to stand in front of the class holding the comic book in your mouth. I catch you again.....you get to come to the teachers room between classes and do the same thing. You listen to your mp3 player you get to duckwalk around the class room and during your free time at lunch.
I hate the sleeping thing big time. I walk around my class picking up students by the scruff of the neck till they sit up. I have been know to whack a desk of a sleeping student so hard they jump a good 2 feet in the air......where I then sing "wake up little rose bud". Not only are they scared but embarassed. I have quieted the whole class and snuck up on a student and patted him lightly and woke him up......the whole class laughs at him....peer pressure...use it...it is good tool.
Funny thing is I have to beat them away from my desk. I always have students around my desk. I cleaned up on teachers day and this year some of the mothers sent me presents at christmas. I have a few students that bring me little treats all the time.
These are teenage boys....I am pretty mild compared to some of the teachers. I have learned that the thing they understand is force. Sad but true. The first year I was there I was aghast.....there were some brutal (well what I thought was brutal) actions taken by some teachers. I asked one of my better students didn't that make him angry, he said no...that just means the teachers loves them enough to hit them.
While I can't bring myself to hit them very often I can sure make their lives hell. One class was so bad I walked out and told the home room teacher I would be having class after school. The boys were terrified because they had to go home afterwards and explain to their mothers why they were late for Hogwan or Academy. Never had a problem with the class again. I may be mean but a pissed off Korean mother is ten times worse.
My worst threat is to send them to the gym teacher. He is the school enforcer. He cuts hair....fingernails and metes out some pretty rough justice. I have seen if first hand and it ain't pretty.

hitting the child will demonstrate nothing except that you agree that problems are best resolved by hitting.
i have a girl - wonderful hard-working, but slower than the others - who hit another one of my students. zero-tolerance. out of the class to the principal. no threats. no stickers taken away. out of the class.
if a child hit me, the same would go. get out of the class. zero-tolerance. there is no quicker way to learn - and, believe me, the other children get the message.
there are no other jobs where being hit by customers is acceptable. this is no different to my mind. |

I wouldn't. jaderedux posted about her experiences with a middle school, and what I find amazing is how much different her experiences are with my own. Hell, I tried once to make my students write "I will do my English homework on time" 50 times once, and I was told that my punishment was too harsh.
They're not doing their fuckin' schoolwork, people!
Dysfunctional staff will be dysfunctional, and pull no punches when it comes to placing the blame entirely on you. The Korean English teachers get a slap on the wrist for teaching poorly, and I'm told that I won't be coming back next year. Yet, if I could've done half of the stuff that jade does with her students, they would've been right as rain. |

OK, if you don't want to hit the kid, here's what you do: Divide the class into two teams--the same two teams for the entire week. Give them points for everything: points for getting their books out, points for giving right answers, points for winning a game (if you play games), everything. Then, if they're bad, take points away. Talking? -1. Hitting? -5. or something. THen at the end of the week, give the winning team a treat--candy, jellies, dukpogie (spelling?) whatever. It'll cost you 2,000 Won, and your problem is solved. Bring a new treat each week, and watch the kids pressure themselves into being wonderful angels for you.
If you don't want to be negative, use positive reinforcement to get them to do what you want. It works too. |
