Back in the states the squaw used to get pretty fussy about the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 rule for cappuccinos. It got old having here roll her eyes and stomp up to the counter for a schooling of the 18 y/o barrista.
Fast forward to Korea 2008. Hell, she's happy that the cups are not styrene and will take what she can get. She's picking her battles and teaching x-million Koreans how to make and drink a proper coffee is not one of them. We were at an Illy place in Seoul this weekend and got pretty caps.
Me? I want the distribution of sweet pickles outlawed at Italian restaurants and on sandwiches. |

Yes, like one of these combined with one of these! Add your favorite beans and you're good to go. |

Here's what I do. Ask for a "Dunkin Original." It's drip coffee with cream and sugar. Then tell them, "no sugar." It ain't fancy, highbrow roast, but it's coffee and cream. |

Those are nice, but these do all the work for you; add the beans, push a button, or set the timer and your good to go. |

People sometimes wont give you something, regardless of how sensible it may be, because its against the rules. This happens to me a hell of a lot more in Korea then it ever did back home. I think people who ascribe to this mode of behavior either a) are socially stunted neurotics or b) hate your stupid face. I think your coffee lady hates you and will use any method in her limited arsenal to cause you the most suffering she can. You cant fight her; she is far too powerful in her sphere of influence. You could bribe her, though. |

Or when you see her waiting at a crosswalk, push her out into the street when she gets the little green man right of way and watch her get hit by a bus/cab/scooter/black car. |

Hell, just go to Tridentes in coex mall( ). They KNOW coffee very well and import most of their stuff directly from Brazil.
I have NEVER EVER been disappointed in their coffee one bit. It's even better than Coffee in starbucks, Holys, Dunkin (crap coffee).
Actually I find their coffee to be better than back home. |

It's not always racist. At Quizno's, for example, they are taught 1 way to make a sandwich. Doesn't come with lettuce? They will tell you they can't give you lettuce. They are following orders and if they did give you lettuce, they could get in trouble for disobeying procedure. Very trivial and bad business, but young Korean workers don't know how to think outside the box.
What I do in these situations is fire off an email to the corporate headquarters either in Korea and/or the home country. I'm sure Dunkin Donuts' office would be pretty pissed off about people not getting milk when they want it. |

[quote"crusher_of_heads"]Yes, it's kind of odd. I went to a Holly's Coffee and had to ask for milk after getting the coffee-I like sugar in it, but unless it's brown sugar it's nothing, and even brown sugar I'm a miser.
I went to a Dunkin Donuts by Juan Station, and the girl said, in pretty good English said "your coffee doesn't come with milk" and she was polite about it.
I politely replied "Give me my money back, please."
delicious coffee with milk. delicious delicious delicious[/quote]

Agreed. Big chains are afraid to break the rules. A buddy of mine (ironically at quiznos too) asked if he could get a cup to put his dr.pepper in. The two working there just looked at us for like a whole minute then looked at each other and you could tell they were hesitant. They so looked wound up thinkinig if it was alright to give us a cup...
Yes a cup.
I forget, but I think ultimately they charged us for the cup
They were scared shitless by our question... it was really quite sad.
Anything that doesn't follow protocol must scare them. Plus you are a foreigner which makes it even MORE confusing. |
