But in fact, there is a deep interpretive chasm between Christianitys others and Judaisms neighbour -- both of which refer to all people -- and Islams brother, which refers only to fellow Muslims. |
Did the Jews who wrote that about "neighbours" really mean to include all of humanity? From my reading of the Old Testament, it seems to me that the ancient Hebrews had a pretty stringent "Us vs. Them" view of the world. In some psalms, for example, they celebrate the smashing of gentile babies against the stones.
Not that Jews today neccessarily behave that way, or that Christians have always lived up to the Golden Rule. I'm just wondering if the Post isn't engaged in a bit of politically-correct whitewashing of their own here. |

The National Post is the most consistently sane paper in Canada on issues of multicult and PC'ism but their bias is solidly christianity = good. |

Yeah, I would peg them as more libertarian than Christian in their overall outlook. But one does get the impression that they like to avoid stepping on Christian toes.
I recall them once referring to Jesus as a prophet, and getting some angry letters from Christians. What was interesting about that was that, as far as I know, the only faith that routinely calls Jesus a prophet is Islam. |

Since when does the state facilitate spiritual self-fulfilment? |
Since it funds catholic education, I guess it does.
The article could be accurate or it could be just a lot of quote mining. |

For example...
Quote: |
Paganism and cults are offered equal status with Christianity. Witches are women like any other in daily life; Technologically [the Raelians] are 25,000 years in advance of us. |
The curriculum states as a straightforward fact that the Raelians are 25 000 years ahead of the rest of humanity in technology? Since anyone could figure out that that isn't true, I'm guessing that there's a broader context to the quote that Kay is withholding from her readers. |

Indeed. That one set off my bells. Look at the quote before:
Quote: |
Witches are women like any other in daily life; |
Geez. Ain't that plain damning. The course isn't teaching catholics to find witches based on spectral evidence and burn them?
The author of the op piece fails to even make the connection: state sanctioned religion is bad, but only bad if it's one the author doesn't like. If it's catholic, then it's okay.
I'm sure this whole course is one huge big waste of time. But if you're going to throw out the bath water, you need to also throw out the baby. The state shouldn't be supporting catholic teachings. If it's trying to convince kids in catholic school that the "prods", jews, muslims, pagans, etc. aren't to be beaten up, fine. |

Yeah, and the line before that...

On the one hand, these guys are always saying that Muslims have to buckle down and accept that they're living in a secular society and can't expect everyone else to kowtow to their religion. But then they turn around and wail about Christianity not being put on a pedestal head and shoulders above the "pagans". |
