I was wondering where some good places to go in the phillipines. I have heard of Boracay and Cebu, but are there any other good places to go?Would not mind some place remote for a few days. Also, what kind of prices should I expect for hotels/hostels down there? Thanks

Palawan, Bohol, Bantayan, Camiguin, Malapascua, etc. are some others you might want to consider.

Hostels - The Philippines isn't really a big hostel country. Most people just get a hotel, maybe around $15/night and up would be a price range...

Are those all beachy type places? We're not too interested in seeing the beach. At least not more than a day or two. More interested in the old colonial towns and seeing nature. Probably going to stay on Luzon the whole time - 2-3 weeks. Right now, my list includes Baguia, the rice terraces, Vigan, and Ilocos Sur. Any other similar places around there?

BTW, the Philippines tourism web site is pretty good. It's http://www.tourism.gov.ph/explore_phil/explore_main.asp#2

Go to Batad and Banaue up in Luzon, hike around there for a week. If you want a remote island beach, head to El Nido on Palawan, rent a boat and have them drop you off on some other island for a couple of days. To get there, fly to Puerto Princessa and take a bus or boat from Sabang. Sabang is nice as well, very secluded and quiet, nature place.

Check out my photos from 2005 from the country.

dannylelievre,

Cool photos. We will be going to the Philippines this February, and are very interested in both the Batad-Banaue area on Luzon and also Palawan. Is 18 days enough to do both?

Just be aware that Luzon in Dec and Jan tends to be very wet and you have an excellent chance of seeing a typhoon first hand, up close and personally.

Go south (below the typhoon belt). Almost anywhere in the Visayas or northern/eastern Mindanao is a better choice.

Camiguin island, Siargao island, Negros, Panay, Leyte, south Samar. They all offer something other than tourist hotels and beach resorts. Pension houses (cheap hotels) run from p400-p1000 per night (and often include private bath, TV, hot/cold running water and breakfast).

---Hi, does anyone have any info about traveling from Cebu to Camiguin? I believe there is a direct ferry once a week(fri), does SuperFerry run dailys between the 2 with a stopover or something? I cant seem to find much info.

I have a couple weeks after flying into Cebu on Jan 25th, looking to chill out for a bit and Camiguin looks like a sweet spot.
Thanks

Take a plane. The best way to travel from Cebu to Camiguin is by plane. There really is no other way.

I suggest that you go to Negros. Negros is the old capital. It houses many of the oldest buildings in Bacolod and in Dumaguete. There are also a number of beautiful national parks. Clearly your best option if architecture is what you want to see.

There is one option...I did it...it's to take a ferry from Cebu to Cagayan de Oro...then there is a bus/ferry option from CDO to Camiguin.

Certainly takes longer however.

The won has gone to crap but you still get 45-50 pesos to the US dollar.

Take crisp new 100's for the best rate and least hassle exchanging them.

To get to CAMIGUIN, one has to travel one and a half hours from Cagayan de Oro City to Balingoan, Misamis Oriental, and take any of the hourly scheduled ferries across the channels of Mindanao Sea, which dock in either ports of Guinsiliban or Benoni. There is a regular sea and air transportation from Cebu to CAMIGUIN and vice versa.

I like the flights on Seair (3 times a week from Cebu).
