I read that the Korean government finances trips of Korean men to other Asian countries to find wives. Is there some shortage of Korean women in some parts of Korea that necessitates this, or is this just your regular old sex/wife tourism? And if there are shortages, then why?

There are more men than women in Korea, due to the mass abortions of female fetuses as parents were able to know the gender of their baby before it was born and didnt want girls. Is the ratio like 9/10? I didnt know the government is funding the "Asian bride trips". But it's interesting since, on the one hand, they wanna keep their "pure blood" and on the other hand, there just aren't enough women...

In addition to the gender-selection abortions, the main guys going over for wives are farmers. Korean women don't want the life of a farmer these days, so the potential pool of available Korean wives is quite small.

Isn't it obvious? The women here aren't all that attractive.

I thought it was because a lot of the dudes are knuckle dragging savages who get their 'game' on at the friendly coffee shops and anma places.

Stats from http://www.geohive.com/earth/pop_gender.aspx (2006 numbers)

Interesting to see some ratios in various countries, like in Middle East or Russia.

Republic of Korea... 48,223,854 ... 24,096,446 (male)... 24,127,408 (female)

Guess the gender ratio is not so bad, or maybe a lot of old women and children in there? Wonder how accurate those numbers are? China and India show about 107 males per 100 females. Russia: 86 m / 100 f. World: 102/100.

but those statistics reflect more men died in the korean war and japanese occupation. Look how many really old women you see compared to men. In my middle schools, no grade has more girls than boys.

Yeah, if they had age groups no doubt there'd be a lot more old women than men. They live longer anyway. Still, it's an interesting thing to look at. Did you see Qatar and the UAE, over 200/100 ratios? Yikes. (under 6 million people combined must make for some lonely men seeking wives elsewhere)

Since women live longer, I guess in most countries at least, why are there more males in the world? Son preferences in many countries? Supposing those numbers are not too far off? I guess China and India are a big reason.

Are you kidding? They have huge round breasts and beautiful curvy figures that would put any western woman to shame. The Koreans just use a cloaking device to hide these aspects of femininity (like the Romulans did to their drone ships in Enterprise) in favour of a twiggy flat chested look. You have to be blind not to see this.

I used the best sensors possible but even the Romulans cant hide real round booty or nice thighs. They just dont really exist here.

Korea has done well in addressing its gender imbalance. In Korea, it has become fashionable to have girls. Korea is the first country in Asia to do it. Well done, Korea. I believe the IMF has a paper out on it.

But if you are a 35 year old farmer, your prospects still suck. Most Korean women can do better by living in the city and working and not getting married.

The gender stats cited above are for the whole population and thrown off by the fact women live longer. You need to look at the breeding cohorts. According to the CIA fact book:

15-64 years: 72% (male 17,760,975/female 17,095,436)
15-64 years: 1.04 male(s)/female

Still a pretty broad range but there are clearly more males than females.

I've seen stats for a couple cohorts about to enter their young adulthood where males outnumber females by 15%.

The sad thing is, the parents who had the money to abort female babies and have sons, those sons probably won't be the ones having a problem finding a korean bride. Clearly they're from a better economic class.

And as noted above, the other problem is young women don't want to stay on the farm and be slaves. They want to live in the cities.

Yeah. I wonder if they're citing citizens or all males and all females. Clearly these small gulf states import a LOT of workers, mostly construction etc.

I know a charming fellow who has been on 3 such trips. The first two trips were to eastern Europe and the last one was to the Philippines. He has no intention of marrying these ladies but rather, to audition, for lack of a better term, as many as possible. As I said, charming...
