If I were going to Korea with a friend who did not have a BA and they wanted to have an extended tourist visa, what documentation would they need to do so?

Your "friend" should keep in mind there are two kinds people on this board:

1. People who went through the hard work of obtaining their degree, and don't appreciate people who come here illegally and cause every Korean to look at our degrees suspiciously...

and

2. People who are here illegally and who probably don't want to give a step-by-step guide to their criminal acts on a public forum.

So I'm not sure how much help you will get. Your "friend" better hope we don't work together or meet, as I don't take kindly to criminals teaching children and will report the proper authorities as to your "friend's" transgressions.

Agreed, you did leave out the third group though. Those that come here legally with a degree, but then teach illegal privates. Which seems to be oddly condoned on this board by the majority from what I have observed.

OP tell your friend to stay home and work on their degree while you are here. With the world economy and job markets the way they are it is not a bad time to be in school.

KoreanNam,

If you and your friend can't figure out how to get an extension on your tourist visa, maybe both of you need to go back to school to learn a thing or two.

C'mon guys, give the OP a break here.

OP, call immigration before you get here, 82-2-2650-6212, and notify them of your intent to come to Korea on a visitor's visa, and that you will be extending the visitor's visa once you are here.

When you get to immigration in Korea at the airport, be sure to tell them that you plan on extending your visitor's visa.

You should provide them with an address and phone number.

I would say your friend has the right idea. Don't waste 4 years of your
life and 40-50 thousand dollars to get a degree. It is totally unnecessary
to teach English here. Even the government agrees with this with their
plans to import high school educated Filipinos into Korean high schools
to teach.

He won't get a job at a hagwon or uni, but who wants one. The real
money here is in teaching privates. In fact, there is no downside. No
stupid forms, papers, checks, probes or hospital tests just so you can
beg for 2,000,000/month.

Don't listen to the people who say freelancers are downgrading their
"profession". These "professionals" have an inflated and unfounded
opinion of what they do.

Selling out another foreigner to the authorities for illegal teaching, whether it riles you or not, is about the lowest thing an EFL teacher can do.

Why? Because it is a "victim-less" crime?

It is a crime and it is not victim-less.

Whose the victim again? I think students are more likely to suffer from self-righteous bores teaching them than free-sprited law-breakers! But anyway, we're all victims in this game.

Yup, it is a crime, but an incredibly minor one, and to report it would violate the greater ethical crime of maintaining solidarity within your respective minority group against what is sometimes a very xenophobic host society.

Furthermore, I've always thought that one of the primary qualities of a good teacher is their ability to be a good colleague as well. Someone who puts cotton wool in their mouth and then anonymously phones up government agencies in the middle of the night to report on their co-workers is simply not someone I want to work with. I also think the character flaws that such behaviour displays is likely to find reflection in their classroom performances as well.

Not that I condone teaching without a degree...

I don't recall the OP mentioning anything about the friend doing illegal teaching. Your best bet is to check with the Korean Consulate in your area.

You really can't figure that one out on your own?

I don't think I could turn in someone, but your arrogant rationalization of illegal behavior does make it tempting.

Why? Because we are all foreigners and we should stick together?
Rolling Eyes
And why only illegal teaching? How about running a red light? How about dating their high school students? Where do you draw the line?

Keep in mind that where you draw the line (so as to speak) may not be where others do Given that, what gives you the right to try to force your standards of morality on the rest of us?

Smile

Most foreigners who want to visit Korea just for a short-term tour or transit are permitted to enter Korea with no visa according to the principles of reciprocity or priority of national interests with a tourist/transit visa status (B-2, 30 days). Special status is awarded to Canadians(6 months) and Australian(90days).

[bolding mine]

A couple of things

So is it okay to report on say illegal teachers who are NOT in our "respective minority group"?

"maintaining solidarity within your respective minority group"

Yup, those charming gentlemen who are famous for wearing white sheets and hoods and terrorising black people were also big advocates of that, if memory serves me right... Rolling Eyes

My "friend" is my "girlfriend". I was asking just specifically about extending her stay with me in Korea . Sorry I did'nt make that clear in the first posting. She has no intentions to teach illegally out in Korea. Thanks for the positive replies about the question.
