The 8400 has very low power requirements. It's unlikely your PSU is flaking out.
If another graphics works, but your new one doesn't.....then there's a chance that your new one is a dud. The motherboard won't post if it doesn't get the correct okay from the graphics card.
If possible, try your new card out in another PC. That will confirm if the card works or not. Remember to uninstall previous GPU drivers and reinstall latest drivers.
It's not unknown for graphics cards out of the box to not work. |

THanks so much for the info.
I read on Nvidia's site GeForce 8400 GS cards have a maximum power draw of 71 watts, which is low. So I think you are right. I have a dud. My PSU is 350, I took a peek.
I thought this was gonna be simple.

Unless you're running a high-spec, overclocked, Quad CPU, with bleeding edge GPU, then don't need to worry about the power supply.
Tell us your rig. Which Windows?
I would be surprised that a buyer of a 8400 would have a power supply issue.
That's a very low-end graphics card |

Tried the old blowing in the slot voodoo? I've had this problem before which I fixed by removing and firmly reinserting the card. Also try connecting a different powerlead to your card.
I've also managed to have the card detect by resetting after the unsucessfull post.

Jeff, if a machine won't get past the Power On Self Test, then it can't possibly be a software problem. A PC should POST properly even if no hard drive is attached. |
