Indictment: Cumberlands student tried to blackmail woman with sex video

By Bill Estep - [email protected]

A southern Kentucky college student tried to force a young woman to send him a sexually graphic video of herself after he stole log-in information from several computers, a federal grand jury has charged.

Sungkook Kim, 23, was indicted Thursday on 15 counts of sending threatening e-mails to the woman in October and November.

The grand jury also charged Kim with illegally accessing other people's e-mail accounts, possessing identification belonging to others, and possessing child pornography.

Kim, who is from South Korea, was a student at the University of the Cumberlands when he allegedly tried to extort the video from a female student. The university expelled him, according to a court document.

Kim was arrested in November. Earlier this month, U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Wier ordered him held without bond.

Kim told authorities that he was in the university science lab more than a year ago when he noticed someone had failed to log off a computer, according to a sworn statement from Donnie D. Kidd, an FBI agent.

Kim said he looked on the computer said found an e-mail with an attached video clip of a young woman having sex, and saved it to a thumb drive, Kidd said.

Kidd said Kim also admitted placing software on several university computers that captured data on keystrokes, allowing him to get other people's log-in and password information.

On Oct. 1, a female student told police in Williamsburg that someone was trying to force her to make a video of herself masturbating and send it to him, Kidd said.

The student had gotten an e-mail that said the sender had four Web cam clips of her having sex with a young man, and that if she didn't make a video for him, he would send the clips to her friends and professors, according to Kidd's statement.

The young woman told police she had made the videos with her boyfriend when she was 17.

Wayne Bird, then a detective in Williamsburg, sought assistance from the cyber-crimes unit of the state Attorney General's Office, which tracked the e-mail to Kim, Kidd said.

Kim told Bird he contacted the female student to teach her a lesson, and didn't really plan to send the compromising material to anyone.

However, Wier, the magistrate judge, said Kim's messages to the woman were "insistent, repeated and extremely threatening."

"The court fearfully wonders where the threats would ultimately have led, if the victim had not alerted authorities," Wier wrote in his order to detain Kim.

When police searched Kim's computer at his home in Williamsburg, they found a file showing girls younger than 12 being raped by adult men, Kidd said in his affidavit.

Kim denied possessing child pornography, but told Kidd he is addicted to porn, Wier said in his order.

"It's okay officer I'm addicted to porn. I had no control."
What a moron. I'm sure he knows that crack addicts can say the same thing and have charges dropped because the officers pity them.

I'm sensing a new drama based on this. Love Story at Cumberlands.

The parents must be bursting with pride. You can just see them the next day at their little parent on parent grudge matches. "Well, my son is studying in the USA." "Mine was too until he tried to blackmail another student over a sex tape..."

I predict a father is about to take a swan dive off a bridge over the Han.

ALL the parents here must be bursting with pride.

You'd think in an age with knowledge of HIV and other STDs, and the odds of contracting them despite condoms, that people would wise up and consider the one-lover-for-life plan.

It's awesome, if you're young enough and smart enough to still be eligible.

(Hey, I've got my faults, too, and this is just one issue... Not trying to be judgmental or holier-than-thou, but wise up, people. You think we're the ones missing out, but believe me, you're totally blowing it, no pun intended.)

on a side note: this on the BBC

Quote:
A South Korean court has fined the parents of a teenage rapist more than $60,000 (40,000) for failing to supervise their son.

The 18-year-old, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, raped a local seven-year-old girl in 2006.

The court said the boy had grown up watching pornography and had imitated a film he had seen, during the attack.

It said his parents could have prevented the crime with appropriate education, but neglected their duty.

The teenager is serving a 10-year sentence for the rape, but a court in Seoul ruled that his parents were also liable for his crime.

A court statement said: "The parents could have prevented the crime with appropriate education but failed to show enough attention to their child.

"They neglected their duty to raise their child so that he can properly adjust to society."

The girl's parents were seeking 225m won ($165,000; 111,000) in damages.

The identities of all the parties involved in the case have been withheld.

Analysts say the case raises many questions about the extent to which parents can be held responsible for the actions of their children.

What does ADHD have to do with rape? My brother has ADHD and isn't a rapist.

First that Korean whackjob in Oregon, then Virginia Tech, now this. Wake up America. When is 60 minutes,20/20 or CNN going to do an expose on the dangers of Korean male sexual predators/ serial killers in our midst. No one is safe from this menace. After Al Quaida, Koreans are the single biggest threat to the safety of Americans.

Im not sure. It would be no different than the Korean media portray foreigners living in Korea.

I think that incident revealed something about both our cultures. Lots of Koreans in Korea were freaked out because they assumed Americans would turn against all Koreans in the USA, which included their relatives. They assumed this because KOREANS WOULD HAVE DONE IT TO US. And when Americans as one stated they don't blame Korea or Koreans, this was just a nut like so many other American nuts, Koreans were both relieved and somewhat blown away.

Well, according to Margaret Cho, Korea was compelled to apologize by the American racists...

Quote:
MC: Well, it's hard because when you're Asian, when you're an immigrant, your welcome in this country is really conditional. And it depends on your good behavior, basically, and your achievements. And we're not considered a part of the country like white people are.

During Virginia Tech, South Korea had to offer condolences, and that's just weird, because that kid was American. And yet so much of his identity was wrapped up in his Koreanness, because that's what was used to define him.

Apparently, Margaret Cho is unaware of the Korean government and media's penchant for defining overseas Koreans or their descendants as Korean, no matter how tenuous their connection to Korea.
