How was the trip?

Hi Brian,
I've travelled quite a bit in Eastern Europe. Poland is still relatively cheap, although it is catching up with Czek republic. Nightlife in the bigger towns and cities is really good. Ukraine is amazingly cheap.

| Krakow, Poland is great. The airfare is steep but the beer and food are relativly inexpensive. |

| Fly to Warsaw instead, much cheaper. Oversupply of 5* hotels, you can snag a good weekend deal. Then 2h40 train to Cracow. Ukraine cheap but difficult now, with econ crisis: only for the experienced. Budapest splendid. |

I did four months there w/ my uni during summer. That was back in 91...Hungary, Czech , Poland, Romania. Czech for two months as we were studying Czech politics. Was dirt cheap. Doubt that now, though...especially Czech . I suggest Romania...should still be cheap. Hell I changed 100$ there and couldn't spend halve in one week and that included five cases of wine which was promptly taken away from me at border when leaving. Pleasant memories...spent most nights in girls Uni dormitories.  |

Poland,Czech Republic and Slovakia are very expensive these days. |

| Kiev and Lwow are two nice cities for sure.If you plan on going to Kiev,make sure you have a fat wallet. |

Everyone clearly has their own definitions of "Eastern Europe". For me, Eastern Europe encompasses the countries that fell behind the iron curtain. I would argue that Poland/CR/Hungary are Eastern Europe based on that and if you had to choose between the 4 points of the compass they'd definitly fall into the Eastern segment.
Regarding the Poles hating the Eastern Europe label, Eastern Europe has a lot of negative connotations from the Cold War, with Western Europe seen as rich, modern and progressive while Eastern Europe was seen as the opposite - It's not surprising that they want to distance themselves from the Eastern Europe label. |

Yes,it's true.Very nice and concise post.
The Polish government considers Poland a Central European country also.
As you said,there were many negative connotations connected to Eastern Europe in the past, and being "Central Europe" distances such countries from their Eastern neighbours while maintaining a sense of uniqueness and distance from the crass capitalism and consumerism of Western Europe also. |

| Slovenia is beautiful. They call it "Austria without the crowds." Macedonia is pretty amazing too. They haven't capitalized on their tourist attractions yet, so you can drive out and have lunch on this two thousand-year-old bridge that you wouldn't be allowed to touch in other countries. |
