So, I guess it's too much to ask that people be intelligent enough to distinguish an individual civilian from their nation's corrupt gov't.
This Anti-American sentiment mostly comes my way from Canadians, which I am not privy to just yet, but whatever. Being from NY and LA it's obvious I did not vote for Bush. I know my gov't is corrupt, as are most governmetns, but the fact of the matter is American citizens are just like any other poor suckaz tryin' to make a dolla outta fifteen cent, and it seems like we are the one country where the actual people are blamed or verbally abused on the basis of the nation's foreign policy.
Also, many may not realize that we might as well be two polar opposite countries. I am not happy with our red states at ALL, and sometimes wish California could just succeed. Man, that would be sweet. No religion in politics, tolerance and acceptance, value on education, etc. But whatever, Canadians, I ain't mad atcha. You guys are some of my favorite people here.
Now there's Korean Anti-American sentiment. Another one that baffles me. THIS is it? Found this here on the wikipedias, and it's pretty weak.
Oh, and LOVE the song... |

Umm...let me be the first to congratulate you on your pointless, rambling post. By the way, California has succeeded, by and large. You meant 'secede', right? |

Yes, of course I did mean seceed, and I meant to post the link as well. I am full of typos and errors today, and perhaps every day.
Guess this will open the door for many such as yourself to jump at the chance to curtly display your righteousness and perceived superiority.
Anyway, just wondering why, especially in the case of Korea? |

As a Canadian, I can understand your feelings. Personally, I think most like to discuss Americanism, and that we can be critical of the U.S. and its policies, most are not anti-American. Seeing Koreans protest about the most minute things about the U.S. and then get wind of some comment made by a Canadian only compounds to the emotions.
If some Canadian gives you a jab, just tell him how you feel, just as you have expressed here, and I'm sure they'll get the hint. |

I hear you OP, it's not fair to be judged and disliked as an individual based on you being an American citizen. There is a real stigma surrounding being American due to all the corruptions such as an unwarranted invasion of Iraq due to them having all that oil we greedily want. Even though America helped many countries over the years, now they're complaining that we're the root of many of their problems and often times they are right in what they think or know.
Does it help that America is blowing up mountains in Afghanistan and taking jumbo jet loads of valuable natural resources? Does it help that America deals in weapons and military hardware to get cheap oil and other valuables necessary to fuel such a large empire?
They're right in that we hurt the world more than help, because we put on this face that we're out to be a do gooder, while it's really about building up other countries for military and trading advantages to put us on top as being the #1 superpower nation; not help people in need. The gigs almost up on this though. |

Considering I lived there for almost 10 years and never heard it once I don't think it means what you think it does, or it only means it in your circle of friends. |

I'm a Canadian and I'm always annoyed when I hear people, from any country, bashing Americans. It just seems to be the easy target. The U.S. is the most influential country in the world. People are bound to notice its problems.
Canada has its share of problems too, but we aren't in the spotlight. |

Absolutely, there's always an ulteriour motive, and as time goes on PR becomes incresingly brilliant at disguising greed and imperialism as a necessary defense of our personal freedom. And people all over America buy this load of crap! That's what upsets me the most, that whole they-hate-us-for-our-freedom-and-we-must-kill-them-before-they-kill-us mumbo jumbo. Or ever worse, the ones who believe that this is God's war and muslims and gays are the enemy.
But I don't think Koreans hate us for the the reasons they should hate us for, or for the reasons everyone else hates us for. I think it's strictly nationalistic for them, and just downright weak. Mostly isolated military incedents, some accidental, most involving very few people. Oh, and the beef... |

Nobody likes being reminded that they're not #1, especially in a Confucian society. Hence the teen suicides. |

We have to be careful about any justified criticism of the United States or light hearted banter coming under the umbrella of 'Anti-Americanism'
I come from a country that has done a ton wrong and you know - I am adult enough to discuss this with anyone of any nationality. I don't have the blood of the empire on my hands any more than the average American out here has the blood of Iraq/Afghanistan/Vietnam on theirs.
I think Anti-Americanism here is as widespread as it is in the UK. I don't see anything out of the ordinary about Korean views on the United States as those views and the amount of people who hold them are similar as back home.
I can't comment on Canadians or their views not being Canadian. |

Jab:
1. to poke, or thrust abruptly or sharply, as with the end or point of a stick.
2. to punch, esp. with a short, quick blow.
noun 3. a poke with the end or point of something; a sharp, quick thrust.
4. a short, quick punch
This would be in the verbal sense.
For an example: By making a quick comment or insult about something is to jab about something.
Does the word 'jab' have another meaning in western Canada? Maybe in eastern Canada it could be the expressed sound for 'job.' "Got me a jab in Alberda." |

Yeah, I'm all for poking fun. My boyfriend is English and we have some great banter back and fourth about our countries. Stereotypes are fun, making fun of each other's countries and dialects is even more fun, etc...
But I have seen and heard some alarming things from my PS middle school kids, that's all, and I can usually tell when they are joking. I don't think they were this time. That got me researching the topic, and I couldn't really come up with any substantial grievances.
My newbie friend was told at the NYC consulate before coming to Korea: "...make sure you bring a lot of condoms because Korean women love American men since America helped Korea in the Korean war..." I ought to warn him that this may not be the case. |

Their "love" has nothing to do with the war.
It has to do with the belief in proportion based on the nose.
"Riding the white horse" and all that. |
