I've seen a lot of people on here saying that their Nonghyup cards that they were told could be used internationally, in fact, did not work.
I just went to Nonghyup and got a check card for 1,000 won and was told that, yes, it CAN be used in other countries.
I'm just curious if any of you have one of these cards and can confirm that it actually works abroad. I'd like to know in advance of travelling if I can really access my account.
The card is blue with the Maestro logo on the front and the Cirrus and BCcard logos on the back. It has one of those IC chips (?) on the front. The name of the card is Nonghyup Check.

Thanks

It has the right symbols on it, my regular Nung Hyup card doesn't have those.

It may work, but only during Korean banking hours....at least that's the way mine used to work before they went and f^&(ed...er I mean changed everything.

It will NOT work!!!!!

I got the same card from an english speaking teller who assured me repeatedly that I could withdraw cash from outside Korea, but I would not be able to make purchases in stores with it. Ok, no problem, I just need to get cash. My co-teacher called to confirm this after so there was no misunderstanding................Went on vacation and was almost left with no money because it didn't work anywhere!!!!

Came home, furious, and went to the bank to rip them a new a**hole. Talked to a manager guy there who conferred with the teller and checked some things on the computer. He came back and told me that it was an electronic error. WTF does that mean? You mean that Koreans can't use this card either?....No, the error is only with foreigner cards....BS!! You mean that your bank just chooses to not allow foreigners this service....Ummmm.....But the teller assured me it would work and also told my Korean co-teacher the same thing.......Ooooh, so sorry......Give me my money and close my accounts now.

Go to Standard Chartered or KEB. They will issue cards that work for foreigners. F-U Nonghyup.

If your trying to get service at KEB and they say no because your a foreigner, just call the woman at the number listed at the bottom of the article below, explain your issue with the bank, hand the phone the offending teller, and things will be sorted for you. She's great. I got my Global Debit Card and credit card because of her.

Improved Regulations on Overseas Travel Expenditures, Newly Introduced

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has been in cooperation with Ministry of Strategy and Finance since January of 2008, working to alleviate foreigners' inconveniences when using their Korean funds overseas through credit cards etc. Finally, we have found a more convenient system regarding the ability to access such funds overseas. These improved regulations entered into effect beginning on June 2nd, 2008.

[Newly Introduced Regulations (2008.6.2.)]

Foreigners can access their Korean funds overseas using credit cards and other types of cards up to $50,000 a year in addition to the amount of taxed income earned in Korea, so that foreigners may feel freer when traveling overseas.

I went to KEB to open up an account today and they told me "Foreigner cannot have international card". So I left and decided not to open up an account today.

This has been covered before.
Basically, it depends on the individual bank of the ATM you use it at.
So far, my Nong Hyup card has worked in Canada (BMO) and Vietnam (I forget which bank).

I've tried at two branches. Can you give me a specific location that would help me out with this international atm card?

ANY KEB branch... Just call the number below and give the phone to the teller after you say you want an international debit card.

So far she has assisted me in getting a global debit card, a credit card, setting up my internet banking and adding my foreign bank account remittance info to do wire transfers directly from my KEB internet banking.

Call her.

While it is stating the obvious, its probably worth noting that you ALSO need to use the correct machines when overseas too.

I think some banks like to be told when you're traveling and they'll 'activate' it for you.

But as far as my experience with Nyonghyup (4 years) they have never been able to give me an international card. Seems a little hit and miss.
