Is it better to exchange Korean Won directly to baht in Korea or to exchange it to dollars first and then to baht in Thailand? |

I have been wondering about this as well. I am leaving on Saturday morning for Thailand. This forum has me convinced that I should not rely on my ATM card for cash. It sure would suck to be stuck in Thailand without any money. Korean TC's seem to be problematic.
So, I am going at it the old fashioned way, cold, hard cash. Now, I have some options:
1 - Exchange my won for dollars at Incheon
2 - Exchange my won for baht an Incheon
3 - Exchange my won for baht in Bangkok - Carrying that much won wouldn't be fun, so I will skip this option.
I will do some math tonight to figure it out. Anyone got a site that can tell me what the rates are like at Incheon, or should I just assume they will be what is stated on the KEB website? |

TAKE DOLLARS. The differences in the exchanges is negligible on the amount you are talking about.
Exchange won to dollars here ($100s). You can put a lot of cash in a small space. $1000 is only 10 notes.
Exchange dollars to baht in Thailand. You get a fistfill of small bills for $100.
DO NOT TAKE WON OUT OF KOREA. they are difficult to exchange and you get a really poor rate of exchange on them when you do finally find a money changer who will take them. |

A word of caution. Don't take all your money to Thailand as cash. If you get robbed - what do you do?????
It's better to take a mix of USD in cash and American Express travellers' cheques. You can buy American Express trav. chqs. at any bank outlet at Incheon Intl. Airport - and they'll be honored anywhere in Thailand.
I wouldn't take a credit card to Thailand - it's not worth the hassle - if you're robbed.
Travelling with a mix of cash and trav. chqs. is convenient and safe for a short-stay vacation. Cash Only is very risky. On my last Thai vacation the hotel owner 'fixed' my room safe (while I was away) and stole $2,000 cash. What a dummy I was for holding all that cash - but at least I had my trav. chqs. to fall back on.

Khap khun mak khap. Mai pen rai na khap. I will put the cash in my bank account in Thailand as soon as I can. I can do this at the ATM, so no worries. Between my wife and I, we have 4 bank accounts in Thailand. I don't think I would feel all that comfortable with that much cash on me for an extended period of time. |

Not a resort, just a mid-range hotel in Pattaya: Chokdee Inn, Soi Bukhau, Pattaya.
I've stayed there for many years - and really enjoyed it. The Dutch guy owner was married to a Thai lady - and they ran it well (Euro standards). But, same old story, they separated and she kicked him out - she moved her family in - and before I knew it - the Eruo customers had left and she'd filled it with non-paying family and Thais.
Sadly, all down hill from there - and I guess they stole my money to try and keep the hotel going over the off season. Damm shame. I've lived there for months at a time, and now I have to find another home-away-from-home.
Happy holidays. |
