Hi guys, I'm a native speaker from England of south east Asian origin. I've been trying to get a job in Seoul for about a month but its the same old story/excuses (Americans preferred, female preferred) I guess it might be genuine requests but I cant help thinking its also a bit racist too. I might be wrong, I might be right, but that not my concern. I have previous experience of teaching in Korea. I'm just looking to get back and earn some doe. Can anyone recommend any recruiters or even schools in Seoul that maybe able to help me out, I tried almost all of them on the jobs board but I'm guessing there will be schools that don't advertise here.

peace and love

Ooh, then you might want to try a different country. They don't pay us in deer here.

(sorry, I had to)

you must be applying for private schools aka hagwon. they tend to go for young, white, north americans since it's a business and they attract more parents. i would suggest going for a public school, if you're determined to come to korea, it's the safest bet (although there is still an enormous amount of crap associated with a PS position as well).

agreed. at Gepik there is a SIGNIFICANT percentage of not so young, and not so white faces for example.

I agree that your color/race is much less of an issue in public schools.. I teach for EPIK/Gangwondo and know many non-caucasian and some non-caucasian non-N.American teachers here...

come work for GEPIK, I met some teachers at the last meeting who can barely speak any English! (it seems they are now so desperate they'll take anybody, including people without degrees)

I see job postings all the time from Hagwons looking for "gyopo" teachers.

I've worked in a PS and during my time there, I met some of the other teachers in PS around my area. We had one guy in our district who was Iranian-American and a woman who was African-American. I tend to think you would be more l likely to be hired as a ps teacher.

In my opinion, the job is a lot safer in some respects because you don't get jerked around about getting paid. The downside is having to put up with a huge bureaucratic system (often getting signatures from three people just to do something), 15 days vacation and you are stuck at school while all the Korean teachers and students are on vacation (unless of course you are taking your few vacation days).

Anyway, you might look into it.
