I remeber reading a long while ago that someone mentioned that it was illegal for those of us in the public school system to teach classes by ourselves with no other Korean tecaher present. I believe it had something to do with the fact that we were not certified teachers and that is why our status is as assitant teachers. Since we (I'm sure some of you are, but only reffering to those that aren't) are not certified another teacher had to be present at all times by law.

I was just wondering if this was true, or if I had just imagined it? Also if it is true might anyone have a legal reference for it.(even if that reference is in korean)

I know by our contracts, Article 3, "GETs shall perform the following duties: 1. To assist Korean teachers with their English class(es) and/or jointly conduct English class(es);" we are only supposed to be teaching alongside a certified Korean tecaher. But I was hoping for something a little more forceful, such as Korean law.

This ridiculous questions keeps coming up again and again. In Korea the law is flexible, there are many layers of law, and at your school the law that counts is the principal's. We're not allowed to smoke on school grounds, according to the government. Every morning there's a gaggle of us smoking on the school steps.

Whether Koreans follow or need to follow the laws that concern Koreans is up to a multitude of factors. Do you think any of them give a shit about a regulation in some government programme that doesn't even apply to Koreans? There is no 'law' and even if there were there likely wouldn't be any enforcement in schools that didn't follow it.

Yea I am more than well versed in that fact that korean law here is an absolute joke. However in particular discussions it can be used as a good bargaining tool if one knows how to correctly apply it. But if as you say no such law exists than c'est la vie. Was only hoping for a little extra meat in my corner, but I will persist without it I guess.

If you're with EPIK...their contract states that the co-teacher must be teaching with you at all times.

Check your contract and see what it says.

No it doesn't say that explicitly, and if it did most summer / winter camps EPIK organises would be illegal.

I'm with EPIK and there is no such clause in my contract.

I've also asked people who claim it's K-law to reference the Act where this is stated. Nobody has because it's only a policy, not the law.

Are you with EPIK, GEPIK, SMOE, or another government programme?
