Perhaps I went a little overboard but the fact remains that Mike Duffy is being appointed to the Canadian Senate by the Queen, that is her duty and authority as define by the Canadian Constitution.
Don't you think that by this example of Mike Duffy it's about time to abolish the Monarchy and reform the Senate to an elected body? |

The Senate I could easily agree with being abolished.
As for the monarchy, abolition might be worth the hassle if the Queen were actually interfering in Canadian affairs. But as we have pointed out numerous times throughtout these threads, she doesn't do that. In actual practice, Canada is no less democratic for having an unelected, hereditary head-of-state.
And in regards to the hassle I mentioned...
You should try to envision just how far-reaching the changes would have to be in forging a new republican system. We would have to spend probably a few years arguing about what sort of presidential system to have, and would in all likelihood just end up with a figurehead president, like Ireland or Israel, who performs the same basic functions as a monarch does anyway. Plus, we would have to come up with a whole new set of icons and terminology. To give you just one small example...

That's the Coat Of Arms, which would have to be redesigned, or maybe even replaced, because it contains references to monarchy. Not to mention redesiging the money, legal terminology, parliamentary names(eg. Her Majesty's Opposition) etc etc. Given that the monarch has no impact whatsoever on Canadian affairs, you can probably see why republicanism has not really taken off in Canada, and is not likely to do so in the near future. |

Right...It will cost more money getting rid of her than keeping her around though I do think if the Queen ever tried to interfere in Canada against the wishes of Canadians, she would be a gonner regardless of the cost. I think she knows full well that she exists as she does today at the mercy of the people of Canada, the UK and a dozen other countries.
One of the main reasons she's still around in Canada is because of treaties with the native groups, or First Nations. If Canada would try to give the Queen the boot, First Nations are going to want a new deal, and that would be more difficult than getting rid of the Queen. The previous kings and queens made many agreements, and though in many cases the First Nations didn't get the best of deals, many to this day hold the Monarch in high esteem and have often visited London for certain guarantees. |
