Quote:
NEW YORK - Eartha Kitt, a sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died, a family spokesman said. She was 81.

Andrew Freedman said Kitt, who was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, died Thursday in Connecticut of colon cancer.

Kitt, a self-proclaimed "sex kitten" famous for her catlike purr, was one of America's most versatile performers, winning two Emmys and nabbing a third nomination. She also was nominated for several Tonys and two Grammys.

Have you become the board's newly appointed Morgue Reporter? Confused

Kitt didn't look too sultry as an old woman gyrating on stage; she looked rather foolish if not raunchy instead.

She managed to offend both the Left (visiting South Africa) and the Right (her anti-Vietnam stance) so I guess she can claim individualism which, she always proudly claimed. It's easy to be an individualistic artist who can overlook the consequences of their public positions.

I long for the day that artists of all stripes recognize that their opinions count for no more than the common man's. Doubt that will happen any time soon, however.

I'm too young to have had much exposure to Eartha Kitt, but I remember seeing some old Batman reruns on telly when I was a kid, and being absolutely with fascinated with her Catwoman:

Here she is at 1:37 minutes. A woman worth turning gay for... Cool

Someone's put together a collection of choice clips of her:
